Post subject: xD transfer speed through printer to computer
Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

Complete newbie here, I bought my first digital camera (Fuji FinePix F10)
yesterday.

How long should it take to transfer pictures to my computer?

I've tried two methods, both through my all in one printer (HP 2575
Photosmart) which has built in card readers and a built in USB 2.0 port.
My computer has no front USB ports, and the back ports are in use plus
they are inconvenient to reach.

Using the card reader in the HP 2575, transfer to the computer is
painfully slow, about 1 minute per 1.4 MB photo (it took 18 minutes to
transfer 16 1.4 MB photos).

So I tried the DSC (USB mass storage) mode using the USB 2.0 port on the
printer (the printer is networked on 100 MB ethernet, so that shouldn't be
a bottle neck). The results were the same. 18 minutes to transfer the
same 16 photos.

Is it normal to take so long?

I have available connectors on my motherboard to add front USB 2.0 ports.
I don't mind spending the money to add front USB ports if it will be a lot
faster to connect direct to the PC.

I find the Xd cards to be considerably slower than CF cards. Much slower.
Olympus C-7070 camera. It uses a CF card and a Xd card, the Xd card is
backup.

You might consider a USB hub instead of the front panel. I have a front
panel with 2 USB ports as well as some other ports. Its nice to have but I
can see that the USB port connectors are showing some wear. A hub is cheap
and can be tossed out if it gets bad.

I decided to go the card reader route. Got a SanDisk 5 in 1 for twenty
bucks at Best Buy. It transferred 24 shots in seconds so now I'm a happy
camper.

Great.

I decided to play around a bit with the various options, using the card
reader ports on the Epson DX620, a couple of proper card readers, and using
the camera as a card reader.

Best results camer with a proper USB 2.0 reader, second best and well behind
was the Epson ports, and the absolute worst was the camera.

In the process I got the Xd card thoroughly messed up. Finally managed to
get it squared away. I have never had a problem with a CF card, I cannot say
the same for the Xd cards.

Do you know if the F10 has a real USB 2.0 High Speed port? If it
has a USB 2.0 Full Speed port it wouldn't be any faster transferring
files to the computer than USB 1.1 ports would.

And I've used CF cards for many years and xD cards for about 1 1/2
years (for my Fuji camera) and never have had any problems with
either type. I suspect that whatever problem you had with the card
wasn't specifically due to the fact that it was xD.

Hi Tony...

The speeds you're getting aren't slow; they're stopped!! Smile

Suggest you add USB 2.0 ports wherever you need to.

Take care.

Yeah, I didn't like the math on that. It would work out to 8 hours to
transfer a full 1 GB card.

I thought they were all in use, but after checking it turned out I had an
unused USB port in the back. So I bought a SanDisk 5 in 1 card reader. It
works great, 24 pictures transferred in seconds.

Camera is C-7070, I doubt it has USB 2.0. Very slow. A raw file takes twice
as long to Xd as compared to CF. I have several of each type.

Sorry, I saw the F10 quote (back several levels) in your reply,
but I see that that's the OP's camera, I wonder if you'd get faster
writes with the latest type H xD cards, the "H" supposedly standing
for High Speed, as opposed to the original, or type M xD cards? It
may be due to the camera's design and not the card itself. It's
probably not worth the expense of getting a CF to xD adapter just to
see if you could write RAW files faster when the xD card is in the
CF socket. Those adapters can cost more than some card readers, and
I can't test it, as my Fuji only accepts xD cards and my old Canon
Powershot only has a CF socket, no RAW capability and is probably so
slow that even the oldest, slowest xD card ever made would present
no speed problems at all. Smile

I have one of those Xd/CF converters, no improvement at all, in fact, much
slower. I am talking about the Fujifilm DPC-CF adapter.

I doubt I will spring for a H type card, unless I KNOW it will improve the
performance in the camera.

Hi...

The C-7070 is usb 2.0 "full speed"

Take care.

File of 459 meg, write time to CF card using card reader is 1min 39 seconds.
Same file to same card in the camera is 10 minutes 30 seconds. Card reader
is USB 2.0. Xd performance is even worse.

You may have missed Ken's point, which is that the C-7070 has a
USB 2.0 port, but it is no faster than if it had a USB 1.1 port
since the port is USB 2.0 Full Speed, which is much slower than USB
2.0 High Speed ports. If the USB 2.0 ports in your card reader and
computer are USB 2.0 High Speed (and from your write time they
appear to be), then they'll be guaranteed to transfer files *much*
faster than if you transfer them using the C-7070. This will be
true whether the cards are xD or CF. The camera's speed advantage
when using CF cards is another matter, and while substantial, is
much less than the speed difference between the card reader's USB
2.0 High Speed port and the C-7070's USB 2.0 Full Speed port.

Yes, that is correct. I almost always remove the card(s) from the camera to
transfer the files to the PC. Substantial reduction of the falling asleep at
the keyboard effect.

Why would they put in a USB 2.0 port in the camera and then make it so slow.

Write times:
Raw exposure, manual everything, lens cap on. From time of shutter press
until red light stops blinking.

11 seconds for a 32 meg Xd card
15 seconds for an Xd card in a Xd/CF adapter in the CF slot.
9 seconds for a 512 meg type M Xd card.
7 seconds for a 1 gig Sandisk CF card.

I have no reason to believe that going to a higher speed CF card or the H Xd
card will improve performance. I have not yet found data to suggest
otherwise.

Although possible, as far as I'm aware, there's no such thing as a
USB 2.0 port that can easily be made fast (High Speed) or slow (Full
Speed). My guess is that the camera uses a USB controller chip made
by Intel, Samsung, TI or some other company, and that Olympus
initially designed the camera and its spec's a couple of years
before the cameras first made it into production. I'm also assuming
that at that time there were both USB Full Speed and High Speed
chips available, but that the High Speed chips were not chosen,
because being newer, they probably also cost several dollars more
per chip than the USB 2.0 Full Speed controller chips. There could
be other reasons, and as much as I sometimes enjoy conspiracy
theories, I don't think that any are applicable here. Maybe I'm
just saying this to escape closer scrutiny of Big Brother's eyes,
ears, nose and eventually those peering into his archives. <g>
