JpegSizer Pro has a built-in web gallery builder and uploader. In a single
pass, it will generate resized images for thumbs and full-size images, and
build the necessary web pages with all links. You can download a free trial
here:

So far it looks like everyone has suggested some kind of locally-run software
that will generate thumbnails and web pages to be uploaded, however...
If you're looking for something that you can run on the webserver that will
generate thumbs and pages dynamically, allow automatic resizing of images in
multiple pre-set dimensions, allow viewer comments and ratings, online tweaking
of images and manipulation of albums and sub-albums (creating albums, moving
pictures around, etc.) and easy upload through XP's publishing wizard, web
forms, and a universal Java utility (meaning you can do it from anywhere), check
out http://gallery.sourceforge.net - requires PHP, and version 2 I believe also
requires a database (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MSSQL, etc.), but those should be easy
if you run your own server. >> Stay informed about: web gallery software? |

Cool that is just what I was looking for. The question is to run it
locally or on my portion of a rented server!

Well ideally you'll need to point a domain at your local system, if you want
anyone to be able to access it easily... if you have space available on a "real"
webserver with the needed support, that's probably the way to go. >> Stay informed about: web gallery software? |

What do you think of using one of photo hosting/sharing services, such as
Smugmug or Zenfolio. For example, on Zenfolio, one can get unlimited storage
and a custom domain name for $40/year, which I think is reasonably cheap.
How does this compare with maintaining your own server?

The problem with Zenfolio is that it is entirely based on JavaScript,
and this is not the way to go. It does not run on some web browsers,
and sometimes it does not run on the web browsers which are claimed it
is compatible with, because of the glitches in software. I prefer to
use the picture hosting which uses good ol' HTML, e.g. pbase or already
mentioned smugmug. In this way, you and your friends can view your
photoalbums regardless of the platform they are using, and glitches are
less likely to appear.

Well, I never had any problem while browsing Zenfolio. On the other hand, it
truly amazes me how fast it is compared to Smugmug.
Anyway, my question wasn't if Zenfolio is better than Smugmug or PBase. I
was asking how does maintaining your own site compare with hosting photos at
a specialized photo hosting service. I see many people putting up sites
using those "gallery software" tools. Seems like too much hassle to me, and
the galleries look ugly in most cases. Is it better money-wise? I'm not
sure.

>From your name, it occurs to me that you are coming from the ex-USSR (I
had been to there). And in the USSR, convenience had a somewhat
different meaning than in the western countries. E.g. it might be
easier for you to set up your own server at home and run it, and most
of the westerners do not want to inconvenience themselves by doing
that. For them, it makes sense to pay some small amount of money per
year, and have all the pictures collected and hosted at a remote server
with a guaranteed support. BTW, this is also a criterion to choose a
picture hosting website; you want to find an established service which
will be around for many years to come. I hope I answered your question
to some degree.

Good looks or ugliness depends more on the photos than on what's around
them. After all, most photo frames are plain.
Many people get web space bundled with their internet access, so
maintaining your own site has no additional cost.
At some point, the only value photo-sharing sites will have over hosting
it yourself will be collaborative features.
