What up all -

So i've been spending all my time shooting with my new Canon EOS 10.1
when my final paper is due next week. Arrrgh! (the camera is awesome
though, so I don't really regret it).

I'm a psychology student at UCSD that is studying digital music habits
and the future of digital music business. I'd really appreciate it if
you could help me finish my paper by filling out my quick survey so I
can finish my write-up. I'm trying to get 500 responses to get a good
sample. This DOES NOT ask for any contact info, so I won't bother
after you help me out. Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,

Ryan Taylor

This is NOT an appropriate forum for homework assignments, as per Usenet

You're an idiot on at least several counts: do your homework, not
fuss with your new camera toy, don't try to con others into doing
your research for you with some bullshit survey - go out and do
it right, and don't abuse Usenet for this sort of OT nonsense. If
there is one main thing that college, undergraduate and graduate
schools is supposed to teach students is how to study, how to do
research, and how to think independently and reach conclusions
based on facts learned in lectures and independent study. Seems
you were out taking pictures that day.

Or, is this a cunningly successful troll ...

Good to hear from you, Jerry.

His URL doesn't even have "ucsd" in it! I wouldn't trust it an inch.
Perhaps that's what he actually wants to hear?

Cheers,
David

Hi, David. For quite a while, I've been strictly in lurker mode.
I've gotten pretty jaded in several NGs from the constant sniping
and flaming whether at me as oft happened in the past or just in
general. So, unless I really have something to say, I just keep
my opinions to myself. In this case, though, I just had to reply.
I've seen people do this before and I'm never quite sure if the
so-called "student" is on the level, whether they really are
trolling, or whether they are actually missing the boat on what
college is all about. Perhaps what caught my eye here was that
the OP brought his post inter ersatz on-topic by mentioning his
Canon camera before he got to the real "reason" for his post.

Incidently, although I monitor this NG, the DSLR one, and quite a
few picture groups, I can't say I've seen much from you either. I
guess you and your family were pretty busy during the Holidays
and are just now coming up for air, so to speak. So, I'll return
the complement, it's good to hear from you again also.

On a similar vein but not on Usenet, my daughter sent me a link
to somebody's web site who ostensibly has established a small
charitible foundation specifically to help severely ill premature
babies. She contributed to it and wanted me to also. Well, I
didn't even go to the site. It looked totally bogus to me from
the get go. For one thing, the so-called foundation founder was
only trying to raise $2,500, a mere drop in the bucket compared
to what might actually be required to help these unfortunate
infants.

As you know, I take a very jaundiced eye on scams and things that
I feel may be people trying to snare to unwary into going to
their web site so they can get infected with some kind of
malware. That's what I first thought of with the premature baby
link and the same thought crosses my mind when some "student"
wants to do an on-line survey. Maybe I'm too suscicious, but I
seldom go to any web sites that I think are at all a possible
risk.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on these subjects, even though
it is drifting into OT-land. Any way, David, have a great week!

It's not a real, live person, anyway. If it were, it would not have
referred to itself as "a student that ... " Come to think of it, it's
probably not a student at UCSD; same reason, plus it's not an Asian
name at the bottom of the plea.

I can't believe I said that.

I take it all back. Well, most of it. OK, some of it.

And the OP's IP comes back as UCSD, for what it's worth.

Please, Frank, I know where else you hang out sometimes. The "people
are who, things are that" argument was lost a long time ago.

You mean like the "God is dead" argument reached resolution?

Someone's got to keep the "faith".

I wouldn't worry about it, John. His paper's due next week, and he's just now
starting to do the research. His goose is probably cooked, whether anybody in
this newsgroup tries to help him out or not.
