Hi,
I live in Norway and for first time I want to order some photo
equipment from B&H. Ther are three shipping alternatives:
- US Mail - Global Express Mail 102.75 USD
- UPS Express 88.50 USD
- FedEx priority 194.50 USD
B&H gives the first alternative as default but I prefer the second
alternative which is cheaper. In fact I remember to have read somwhere
that UPS is faster also. Is it OK for me to choose UPS?

regards,

Mogh

What is important is who is going to clear it through customs. You
should talk to your post office about it and call UPS and FedEx and ask
them specifically. Sometimes the clearance is included in the price
and other times your package will arrive and then you'll be notified
that you must arrange clearance through an agent. Typical fees can
range from 50 to 150 Euro. You should also check on what is dutiable.
B&H will have no info on your specific country and the respnsibility
will fall on you. It varies from country to country but inter postal
systems tend to be more lenient with customs duties whereas private
shippers must treat all shipments as commercial. Postal systems will
often allow you to act as the agent although you will find yourself
with a mess of papers to deal with. My experience is that FedEx
typically has customs included in their higher rates whereas UPS does
not although you must confirm this with whoever acts as the shipping
agent at your end.

It's something you need to factor in when buying from foreign but the
clearance agent's fee is the same whether there are ten items in the
package or one, so a big enough order can make it worthwhile. Dutiable
items and rates will depend on Norway. Good luck.

Hi Mogh,

UPS has an excellent reputation in the USA, and I would guess that they
are also good overseas. Just make sure that you tell B. and H. that you
want to sign for your package when UPS delivers it to your door. If you
do not have a receipt from UPS, and the package is stolen from your
door, then you would have no proof that it arrived.

Good luck.

Morton

I don't know about Europe, but UPS has extra charges and such getting things
to Canada... I would go with the US mail.. USPS.. FedEx regular if they have
a less expensive rate I would go for it..., the priority option might cost
more, I guess it depends how much in a hurry you are to get it...

for me I would go USPS or FedEx... LAST choice UPS... kk

I concur for North America.

Within the country of origin, UPS is usually pretty good. But UPS does
not cover the customs brokerage fees for cross-border shipments, so
it's always an additional cost, and usually a hefty price above what
the actual brokerage fees would cost if you do it yourself. UPS calls
this a processing fee, and once you include all costs, it's higher
than the others. FedEx usually covers all costs and there are no
surprises.

However, I too am unsure how FedEx would handle a shipment to Norway.
I would contact them to confirm before making any decisions.

Hello, Kevin:

That's absolutely horrible! I hope he had it insured, adequately?

In Canada we absolutely won't use UPS on purchases from the USA.

Why? Because UPS gouges on their customs brokerage fees. There is NO
DUTY on many items including photographic equipment, but UPS will charge
a very hefty "brokerage fee"

To Norway it would be a different, but I would check to see what the
actual fees are, it could still be cheaper by mail.

To elaborate on this: other shippers also charge a fee for handling
customs brokerage, but they include it in the total shipping cost that
they quote up-front, so you know you're going to be paying it. And the
fee is usually pretty reasonable for low-value items.

In contrast, UPS Ground quotes a very low fee that includes
transporting the package but not brokerage. Then, when the package is
sitting in their warehouse, they call and ask if you want to have them
handle brokerage for an additional fee. Essentially, they're holding
your package hostage until you pay more.

The extra cost is enough that you probably wouldn't have chosen UPS in
the first place if you knew about it and could compare total cost to
what other carriers charge. But once it's in their warehouse, you have
few choices. You can pay their fee. You can refuse the shipment and send it
back to the shipper (but you lose what you've paid for shipping, and you
still have to ship it by some other means, and you've lost a week).
You can drive to the warehouse and handle customs clearance yourself (if
you live somewhere near the warehouse, and can take the time off work).

Lots of people consider this sleazy and underhanded, and refuse to use
UPS after being burned once.
