Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

Back in July (prior to heading to Switzerland and Austria with my
wife) I posed the question, "Should I retire my old SLR, or not?" I
had a lot of really worthwhile replies which did help me. I ended up
taking my Canon Powershot A640 (set at the highest level) and a
compact tripod (best thing I ever did). I am very, very happy with the
results (some great photos). I may end up buying a digital SLR further
down the road but in the meantime the money saved will go toward our
next trip (to Italy) in 2008. So, yes, I guess my trusty old SLR has
been retired; a shame - but that's life.
Thanks to all who helped me make this decision.

Congratulations! My older Powershots also retired my Nikon SLRs,
about 7 years ago. Although not able to match the best images the
SLRs could provide, the Powershots didn't have many of the SLRs
negatives (p.i.) Smile

I agree in some extend that film is still great, but for all the
conveniences
of digital, I retire my film cameras for a long time ago and sell them
for
film camera collectors.

I've got one of those too, from back when they came out! Mine is a '99 and MAN
they were expensive!

Though they are merely two MPs, the images can be interpolated to a larger print
size in genuine fractals and Irfanview, makes them still quite useful though a bit
large for toting around for snap shots. the largest file size it makes prints to 5x7",
do you interpolate?

I'd been thinking about taking some photos with my old Nikon SLR 35
mm. just to make sure it's still in working order. Most of the film I
shoot these days is actually 110. I have the Minolta and Pentax 110
SLRs, and it's a lot of fun to try and get something of quality out of
a negative the size of your fingernail.

You're right, ASAAR. And I think that as I get to be able to use all
of the facilities of my digital camera its convenience and portability
will confirm that while parting was such sweet sorrow it was for the
best...

Wow! If I'm still using my Powershot in even five years I'll be
happy...
Cheers!

Yes, it's all about 'convenience' isn't it - and flexibility in terms
of being able to view shots immediately and edit later. But, I think
I'll keep my trusty SLR even if just for old-times sake....
Cheers!
