I'm generally good for no more than a roll per week. I shoot for my own
pleasure and I've always been wary of wasting film. It goes back to my
childhood days.
The good part about this is that developing and scanning a single roll of
negs doesn't take long, so I can keep on using my film cameras. Film
development takes 20 min at my local CVS Pharmacy, and their photo
department is open 24/7. It's a 10 minute drive each way, so it takes me 40
minutes round trip and I'm ready to scan. Two hours in the scanner and I'm
ready to edit. I would never be able to develop and scan multiple rolls per
day, but my light workflow makes the process quite pleasant.
What did you guys do back when everybody shot film? Surely nobody was
taking hundreds of shots per day, unless they were for profit . . . >> Stay informed about: Wonder how many quit printing their photos |

I shot a roll a week when our kids were born. Never was satisfied with
processing quality, though. Also keeping prints organized was a b#tch.
I wish I bought a digital camera back then. >> Stay informed about: Wonder how many quit printing their photos |

I never did print more than a small fraction of my images. As most
courses in photography teach, film is (was) cheap. Unprinted digital
images are even cheaper!
I always shot lots of shots for each picture I wanted. Still do-
maybe even more.
I print from my computer, my wife likes a local Wal-mart photo
center. I can look at what I get, and easily correct it.
I print for framing for walls, entries in monthly photo club
competition, and for showing smaller prints to friends.
I used to do B &W darkroom stuff. So much easier now, and I can even
do my own color. All the fancy darkroom stuff I did- burning,
dodging, Kodalith derivatives, composite images- so much easier now. >> Stay informed about: Wonder how many quit printing their photos |

Judging from the replies to your question, most of the enthusiasts
here prefer to look at their pics on the monitor.
I have noticed the machines in the local drugstore are always
busy with people getting the digital shots oprinted. >> Stay informed about: Wonder how many quit printing their photos |

I print the photos I want to give away as gifts, frame to hang at home

I print ones I like - for display and 'showing off'. We also, from time to
time, load a new set on the 'digital photo album'. >> Stay informed about: Wonder how many quit printing their photos |

Last time I printed a photo was for use on my passport which I renewed
last summer. I almost never print them now either.
I do have a home inkjet printer but the cartridge dried out even
though it had plenty of ink left. I bought another cartridge that
came in a sealed container, and have occasionally wanted to print a
picture, but then thought "if I unseal the cartridge and print just
one picture, the cartridge will then dry out before I print any more,
so there goes $30+". I probably won't open the cartridge unless some
situation arises where I have a lot of pictures to print. This isn't
anything like my monochrome laser printer, which I used for 5+ years
on one toner cartridge.
I got my passport photo (above) printed at Walgreen's, and it cost
just 30 cents per print, but getting it done was a bigger pain in the
neck than I expected. For example, they tried to collect my name and
address before they'd print my picture (I refused to give it to them).
I also get privacy paranoia over uploading my digital images to some
damn retail store and thinking they might be retaining copies,
although I'm a bit extremist in this regard.
If they made a printer that didn't have this drying-out problem, I
might print pictures more often. As it is, I get by without it. >> Stay informed about: Wonder how many quit printing their photos |

Hi
You can get quite a lot of 10 x 8 s into a display book, which is an easy to
show people your work.
Unlike the old days, you can now delete the ones which are not keepers.
That was not quite such an easy decision to make, when it involved dumping a
whole strip of 6 negs.

Why don't you give the dye-subs a look?

Well, I am not even a serious amateur. All pictures that I take are
for my personal use - and there's only so many walls in the house.
I am waiting for digital picture frames to become cheaper and larger. >> Stay informed about: Wonder how many quit printing their photos |

I don't print unless someone requests a print. If I have a few to
print, I use my inkjet, but 15 or more goes to Sam's. >> Stay informed about: Wonder how many quit printing their photos |

Printing is too damned expensive, the home printers I've
had seem to clog up if you look at them crosswise, and
matching screen to paper to processing program is a pain.

Having read all the other replies, I don't see any comments on what I
think may be the best reason to print the best of the best, at least.
Preservation. If technology keeps evolving as it has and all you've
got in 10, 15, 20 yrs. from now of today's best photos are today's
digital copies, on whatever media, you simply may not have them
preserved. So, I'd recommend at least a Fuji Crystal Archive, or
Epson UltraChrome print of your best to save. Then you at least will
have that when your digital copies are crashed or the media no longer
readable. Think long term. I'm currently scanning special family
negatives and prints from 1891 onward and will be distributing digital
and print copies to several family members and feel very fortunate to
be able to do so. I have no confidence that the digital photos I save
today will be available digitally in 100 yrs. with the vagaries of
technology and accidents. >> Stay informed about: Wonder how many quit printing their photos |
