Instead of costing $50 piece like before, it isn't hard to spend $300-
$400 on an ink jet. So why are we still being RAPED on ink cost by
the mfgs? Do you know that the cost of ink in some cases is as much
as gold? By weight that is. It takes about 10 tons of rock blasted,
dug up and processed to make an oz of gold. Do the mfgs SERIOUSLY want
us to believe it costs anywhere NEAR this to produce ink???

Does Kodak produce a good pictoral inkjet printer? Plus, the latest
sales gimmick by Canon and Epson is ink image longevity.

See the new Kodak all-in-one units. Their claimed cost of consummables is
1/2 the competition.

Yes. The aforementioned all-in-one units are 'photo quality'. I believe
they also make some rather expensive professional units.

Let's face it, they make the money on the ink. As I recall the EU has
attempted to correct this, but I seem to recall it ended up as something of
a stand off.

BTW I use a color laser and it work surprisingly well and the cost per
unit is low.

Why do you think you should be getting ink near cost?

Here's an idea, start your own ink mfg company, undercut all OEM ink
prices, and make millions.

As I recall, with my first laser printer, the biggest cost was in the
printer, though the toner and drum cartridges were still expensive as
all get out: IIRC, I paid about $2,000 for an Okidata Laserline 6 that
Okidata had to replace five times before one worked. That was
something like 20 years ago.

I don't like the high charges for ink, but you have to know that the
manufacturers will make their profit somewhere, or they won't be in
business long.

Too, if you think $300 to $600 for a printer like the Epson R800 or
R1800 is too high, it's quite possible you should be getting your
photos printed elsewhere.

You can't. The DMCA makes that illegal. Epson just won a court cause dealing
with 3rd party inks. This why most printer makers put chips in the ink
cartridges. It isn't to offer anything of real value to the consumer it is
to make the ink cartridges and their greedy bottom line subject to the DMCA.

All companies charge "what the traffic will bear' (i.e.,
what buyers will pay) for their products. The companies
that make printers don't have a monopoly on ink sales. You
can buy cartridges refilled with cheaper ink, or you can buy
bulk ink and refill your own cartridges.

You can also choose to buy a printer that offers cheaper ink
cartridges.

Your choice. Vote with your wallet. Ranting doesn't change
anything.

That is what is called a razor blade business. You can get
a razor free or at a low cost, but you have to buy blades
that fit it. It is perfectly legal.

Hi Rich,

We think so, you may want to try reviewing some of the articles on this as
well as what Kodak put together on the web. Kodak inks and papers work to
provide great 'longevity.' You can try reviewing at:

Talk to you soon, Rich,

I left my Epson 2200 out on the street because the ink and paper costs
were ridiculous and unjustified. As if normal printing didn't have an
insulting enough price, I had to pay for the waste of the nozzles
clogging up mid-page and the paper cutter randomly adding a few inches
here and there. I'm done with Epson.

I'm using a Canon Pixma now. I'm sure Canon makes plenty of money off
its consumables but it's much more affordable to use and it almost never
faults on a print.
