Post subject: A printer question if I may
Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

I am planning my firsy foray into the printing world and of course I'm
trying to learn everything I can. Do I need special software to allow me to
print photos or can I use the software that came with my D70 camera and also
hopefully with the printer.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.....Chuck.

Yes and yes. :^) How's that?

Yes, you CAN use the software that came with your camera/printer. Yes,
you need special (read: designed for the purpose, as opposed to general
purpose with printing thrown in) software to make the MOST of your
photos, printing wise.

Ken, I'm curious. What printer software are you referring to? I've been
printing photographs since I purchased an Epson stylus inkjet??? a
decade or so ago and, while I process my pix and open the printer driver
from another application (back then PS4 now PS CS), I've never used
anything but the drivers that come with the printer to do the actual
printing. Does this software you speak of control spooling different or
does it just offer more options as far as layout?

I'm not talking about the drivers, I'm referring to the software used
to prepare the image for printing.

You are going to spend £500, (Epson R1800), on a Printer, and yet you seem
to know less than nothing about printing.

You don't even seem to have any kind of editing program.

You need to do considerably more research, or stop trying to kid this group.

Roy - Haven't spent any money yet, still asking questions. But you're
right....I know next to nothing and was hopeful to learn through this group.
The Epson printer was a question only as I had heard it was the cadillac of
desktop printers. I have been reading books, but so far I've found more info
here. Also no kidding intended.

Chuck.

Hi Chuck, one such program is QimagePro. You can download a trial at
http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage. It will do the re-sampling and
sharpening for you. It has a built-in editor which can be used to do simple
editing which is applied at the time of printing. Great program if you
really want to get the most out of your printer.

You do need a printer driver. Other than that, photo editing software or
word processor will allow you to print it out.

Hello, Chuck:

My Epson Stylus Photo 825 (a cheap model) produces stunning prints,
even on plain paper. When photo paper is used, they're practically
indistinguishable from those made at most commercial labs.

The 825 has an annoying tendency to clog, yet I'm willing to put up
with such quirks, due to its fantastic performance. If you want the
very best photo-quality output, and can tolerate a few ink-related
hassles, I'm convinced that Epson is the best way to go.

Good luck!

Cordially,
