The easiest path to color managed enlightenment is via Epson.
Because of the way the drivers are structured and the limited paper surfaces
Canon offers it is, IMHO, more difficult to achieve accurate color printing
with Canon printers.
Caveat printor.

Rubbish. I do color managed printing every time with my 8500. I can use
any Canon or Epson paper and send away for a profile to precisely match
it to my printer. What exactly are you talking about?

You complained for weeks or months that printer drivers
were impossible to set up. You specifically cited various
Canon models and Canon PDFs on the matter. Oh, how
you whined....

We told you at the time it was simply a matter of sussing out
the drivers. Now you say you it's a breeze... Glad to see
you've finally figured it out.

I think it's a fair statement that Epson and Canon print drivers
are structured differently, and that Epson's drivers are more
straightforward to use in a color-managed environment.

In my estimation, Canon's print drivers are dumbed down
too much. Granted, my last in-depth encounter was with
my S9000, two or three years ago. Plus those Canon PDFs
that you cited.

Epson at this point provide real ICC profiles for their printers
and papers, along with explicit instructions in the help files,
in the manuals, and on the web, explaining how to use them
within the driver.

Canon would not be in the game at all if they didn't support
ICC based color management. But in evaluating their
"typical" printer user, Canon apparently still feel that most
users are *not* using ICC printer profiles.

Thanks chaps.
Sorry to start an argument, but I have opted for IP6600.

Results are good - better than on the high street. (Mind you, D&P of 35 mm
on high street has been very poor for last 15 years or so since processors
were automated).

And I was absolutely correct in my whining. NONE of the books on the
subject tell you how to set up your printer for color management. I
finally was pointed to the Red River paper site, where they spell out
the settings for Canon and Epson printers that you need to do color
management. The terms are non-standard and intrinsically meaningless, so
it is very difficult to figure out what to check or do in your printer
in order to use the magnificent profile that you have set up in
Photoshop. But now that I know, I can send away for a profile from
Cathy's and actually use it.

I think what you must be trying to say is that Canon doesn't offer
enough profiles for various papers, nor do they tell us how to use them.
Like you say, even in their PDF there is not info on how to set the
printer drivers.

I probably agree, but that doesn't mean that it can't be done, or that
it is any more mysterious than on the Epson. There are, after all, only
two possibilities: Color managed by Photoshop by means of the profiles,
and printer color management. The trick is to know what settings cause
each, for your particular printer.
