Post subject: So...what do you -do- with your photos?
Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital, others (more info?)

Hi,

I've been enjoying digital photography for a few years now. I have,
literally, thousands of photos. I recently took ~900 pictures in a
single day (a relative's wedding; better safe than sorry). The question
that arises in my mind is: Now what?

I'm not referring to storage, archiving, or backups. I mean: Now that I
have these photos, many of which I'm quite pleased with, what do I do
with them? I've already enjoyed taking them and looking through them
when I unloaded the memory card, but what next?

I have a couple pictures hanging on the wall at home, but there's a
practical (and aesthetic) limit to that. I've recently put a frame on
my desk at work that can hold three 4x6s, two 5x7s, or one 8x12, and I
hope to change its contents regularly. Every once in a while I pick a
new recent photo as my desktop wallpaper. There's one photo that I've
given (framed) as a present to people leaving town. But this only
brings a couple dozen photos to light. What about the rest of them?
Shall they languish, unseen, on my hard drive?

For me, the answer has been a web gallery. I run a photo gallery that
most of my friends and family are aware of, and many of them return on
a regular basis to see pictures of the latest family party, or the new
baby, or my vacation pictures, or just whatever I happen to have tossed
up. It's been quite rewarding, especially as I see people returning for
no reason other than to see what's new. People can even leave comments
(though few do).

But I'm curious: What does everyone else do with their pictures? Are
you content to just take them and have them? Do you sell them? Do you
display them online? Do you print them? How many, and what do you do
with them afterwards? In short: What, if anything, do you do to give
your photos an existance beyond an annoyingly large amount of data to
archive?

They go on www.flickr.com. After some serious editing, of course. I
shoot a lot but only 10%-20% are worth showing to anyone.

One thing that has been well received around here is to take a bunch
of the pictures (pick a theme) and using a utility such as
ProShow Gold from Photodex, make a DVD -- you add your
transitions, captions, music etc. Family and friends enjoy
watching things like that where it works well, no fumbling with
the old family slide show etc. I also rename all my pictures
with the date/time stamp so it is easy to organize them by
date (and later tell when they were taken even if the EXIF
has been lost/modified by editing). For example, a picture
DC_060923_0919_22.jpg was shot Sept(9) 23, 2006 at 9:19 and
22 seconds in the morning (I use a utility called PIE to do it, but
others exist also). Trying to actually name pictures, you rapidly
run out of names that make any kind of sense. Check out
Photodex. Another one that gets good comments from people
is Memories on TV.

I do a number of things with my photos and I find having more is
better then having less.

I belong to a paddling club and have taken large number of photos of
paddling events, one of the thing that I've used these photos for is
making a large collage, had it printed at 12 x 18 at Costco. The
members of the club loved it and I ended up making a lot of them for
people.

I also will do slide shows, again of these was of paddling photos and
again people really enjoyed it. Slideshows of trips are a lot of fun
to look at years after the trip is done, I will give each photo just a
second or two to keep the thing moving, add a little music and off we
go.

I also get a lot of request for photos from people, with DVDs so cheap
it is easy to give them copies.

Many of my photos are taken to be before photos, of areas of town that
I know is going to change over the years. So a lot of the photos
might not have a good use right now, but in twenty years they will be
very nice to have.

I also use photos as a diary, I find photos to be far more effective at
keeping track of what my wife and I have done over time then trying to
write it down. View just a handful of photo and you have in a glance
more information then pages would tell you. As an example if we have
friends over for dinner I will photograph the dinner so that he next
time they come over I can go back and see what we fixed them.

I definitely like slide shows, others may hate them.

I always think about this but never get around to it. I love photos of my
area from long ago, and I'd hope if I did the same that someone in the
future would enjoy them.

Buy "The DAM book", and read about Digital Asset Management, so while they
may sit on your hard drive for quite some time, they can still be viewed and
used in a quick, easy manner!

I print some, I give some away, I sell some, I send some to relatives,
and I put some online. But I don't delete them. Early on, I thought that
my whims of the day concerning cropping, editing, or deleting were "right"
choices, only to find later that my ideas had changed. After a few cases of
that, I gave up on deleting things, I just store them in a way that they can
be easily useful later on, no matter how many I accumulate.

One thing that I do is use my photos to populate a screen saver. I have
an album of a few dozen of my favorites, and a screen saver program that
randomly switches between them every several seconds. It gives a nice
varied background when I'm working at my desk.

Beyond that, web galleries plus a few prints destined for wall hangings.

Take a look at ProShow Gold or ProShow Producer from www.photodex.com.
Once you get teh hang of panning, zooming, caption effects and soundtracks,
you'll be amazed at how your images come alive for family & friends as DVDs.
Truly amazing results are actually quite easy.

ProShow is NOT a typical "slideshow" as you remember growing up.
With panning, zooming, caption effects and soundtracks, you'll be blown
away.
Literally blown away...by those same images some might have otherwise fallen
asleep watching via the old standard and boring slideshows of the past.

The same as you.

Makes the cost of the equipment hard to swallow, however you have captured a
moment in time that is irreplaceable when it comes to family photos.

Yeah, I'll have to check with my cousin, she shot my grandpa's 90th bday
party with her 20D, what she used to create her slideshow. She did a pretty
damned good job, unfortunately it took her 9 months to do it, better late
than never!

So, does this "paddling club" involve boats on the water or
some other form of recreation involving paddles and the
back end of people ???? (I couldn't resist Smile )
Do check out Proshow Gold from Photodex though -- I
use it often and in general am happy with it.

It is an outrigger canoe club, which is more or less the state sport in
Hawaii and becoming popular even on the mainland. The club owns a
number of 6 man canoes two of which are koa. We also race one and two
man outrigger canoes.

This is one of the canoes

But mainly we drink lots of beer.

Very nice photo.

The person in seat two in the closer boat is not holder their paddle
correctly, but not
many people would notice that.
