Post subject: printing passport pics on 4 X 6 - pharmacy store wants to charge $10 for one print!!!
Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

Hello Everybody,

I printed passport size pics on 4x6 size print. (I resized the original
pic to 2x2 in photoshop and put 6 passport pics on one 4x6 print) I
ordered the prints using Kodak Kiosk, the rate was 19 cents per print.

But after looking at the prints, folks at pharmacy photo lab wanted to
charge $10 for one 4x6 print !

Of course I did not pay $10 per 4x6 print but they insisted that the
print was not 4x6 and I should pay passport pics price. My reasoning
was $10 price would include taking a picture and printing - whereas I
was simply printing 4x6 print.

I am really interested if anyone here had similar experience? What is
your take on the above situation?

Thanks,
Pat

Tell them the $10 passport pic charge is for THEM taking your picture,
and you took your own picture so they should just charge for a normal
print. Sheesh.

I did about what you did for my own passport pic and the drugstore
(local Walgreens) didn't give me the slightest bit of trouble.

Hi...

Good grief, I do it often. Not for passport pics, of course,
but to make wallet sized prints for grandpa's and grandma's
and aunts and uncles and so on.

Sometimes 2 per 4x6, sometimes 4. Do it at Future Shop's Kodak
system. No one's ever said a word about it.

Take care.

If you mean the 'do it yourself' kiosk that only does 4x6, I've used
that many times at CVS, nobody even looks at what I printed, just charge
for the prints. I'm glad to told them to shove it. Re-reading your post,
since you paid only 19c (kiosk is 29c), you probably mean they made the
prints. Regardless, you did the right thing and how the hell did they
know they were for a passport, could have been wallet photos for your
girl friends!!

Of course that is rediculous. Please print the actual name and
address of this "lab". Thanks.

Hello Everybody,

I greatly appreciate your responses/feedback/suggestions. You guys are
wonderful. I think many of us agree that ".........the $10 passport pic
charge is for THEM taking your picture..........: and not for printing
4x6. ( I have done simiar prints at Adorama and Walgreens in past and
never had problems.)

I would like to give you more details on transaction. The prints were
ordered using Kodak Kiosk (at Rite Aid drugstore) and they printed it.
When I ordered on kiosk, I got the the receipt showing normal 4x6 print
charge(19 cents). This is a customer copy you keep. Whey saw the print,
they wanted $10 per print. In other words, I ordered prints by agreeing
to pay 19 cent per 4x6 print. And after they saw this print, they want
$10 per print ! Of course, I did not pay $10 per print but it was
unpleasant situation.

Again, I greatly appreciate your replies/feedback. It really made me
feel much better. Thank you everybody.

Regards,
Pat

I've never had this situation because I actually own a photo printer and
could have printed your photo in a couple of minutes. If you're going to
quibble about their posted rates - they were in full view, weren't they?
So why should you complain when they say you're trying to cheat them?
Get yourself a cheap and cheerful photo printer and don't waste time and
money on these places designed for technophobic retirees.

Well, that is what the USPS charges for them, as I recall from recently
renewing my passport.
If you can afford to travel abroad, don't sweat the $10!

Slightly crazy situation.

According to their logic they should have been charging 6 x $10.

If you paid them you're crazy.

I would have called the district attorney down on them. Trying to up
the price to $10 after the fact is illegal for several reasons.

There USED to be justification for charging high prices for passport
photos as they had to be able to stand the head used to fuse them under
the plastic (lamination). The photos are now scanned, and the whole
page is reproduced, already coated in the plastic, so the prints no
longer must be heat resistant. The trick is to get the face within the
correct size to fit into the place on the page (although it should be
possible to reduce it, doing thousands of passports per month, this
would add waiting time for everyone. In my case, I thought the price
was a bit ridiculous, but I was there, and it was much more convenient
to pay the $10 (for each of us), then to leave, get the pictures, and
return. The price is about 10% of the cost for a new US passport. If
you can't afford the picture, it would be better to give up the idea of
getting a passport, because your probably can't afford a trip out of the
country.

Glad to see you didn't give in to their extortion!

Just another option for some (maybe): With our AAA membership, we were
able to to to the AAA office and get FREE passport photos for the whole
family, just this past weekend. Maybe that depends on your type of
membership, or whether you have a really nice agent??? I dunno. Free
works for me!

I'm surprised some of the people in this thread disagreed - without any
explanation.

Certainly it's good you didn't pay them. If they demand it, ask for a
policy statement. You printed a 6x4, and not a 2x2. I just had my shots
taken. They just used a digital camera, printed it to something like
6x4, and then cut it. The $10 should include that last bit as well...

Heck, I did this years ago in the film days as well - no one complained.
