In a word, no. The apparent problem is that many (most?) cameras save
images in EXIF JPEG format (not the same thing as EXIF tags), whereas PC
software saves images in JFIF JPEG format.

You can't do that with any digi camera unfortunately.

Does it always recompress the image? Is there no option to just convert
the file format without recompression?

Yes.

When playing back on a TV screen or camera viewfinder, there is no need,
but you can set the save quality to one of several options.

There is a need if you want to preserve image quality, for which there
can be valid reasons -- there are other uses besides just low quality
viewing -- suggest you add a no-recompress option.

Because I don't want to recompress images and lower the quality in any
way. That's fine for TV, for now at least, but not for my camera.
