Has anyone modded a Nikon Coolpix to output RAW images?

If you don't have to stick with Nikon, then the Canon's
can be modified with CHKDK, I did my little carry everywhere
Canon SD1000, easy to do and does not touch any of the
firmware..

I would not try this unless you are able to restore the camera's original
firmware.
In any event these older cameras have very noisy sensors compared to today's
very noisy but less so small sensors.
I doubt that raw output could improve on that very much.
My still working Nikon 990, the wonder of the ages when it debuted, produces
images that I would now rate as pretty awful compared to my teensy Casio.

OK. I understand.

But, for _my_ curiosity, what was the outcome?
Did it catch fire, render people naked, or - just maybe - produce better
quality images?

I've not used the camera for some time - it belongs to my wife. As I
recall, it enabled raw and a higher quality jpeg (those were the features
of interest to us) and they work fine.
