Post subject: memory card speed
Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

Hi, I have a Canon G3 digital camera, which I've had for a number of years
although it hasn't seen much action. I was disappointed with the shutter
lag and due to this in three years it's taken under 700 shots. I recently
purchased a Sony Cybershot DSC P100 and the difference in speed is marked.

Is the improved shutter delay purely due to improvements in technology over
the last few years or could it have something to do with the speed of memory
card? In the Canon I was using a 12x Lexar card, my Sony has a Lexar Sony
Memory Stick Pro.

I was looking to have a bit more control over my photography than the Sony
offered and looked out my Canon again. Although I'm sure the picture
quality is better; despite the lower pixel count, I'm frustrated with the
shutter delay. Will I see a marked difference (or indeed any) by upgrading
my memory card to say a SanDisk Extreme III?

Your help is appreciated.

Kind regards

Kev

It's mostly due to improved camera technology ... built-in high-speed
buffers, e.g.

Shutter delay has little to do with memory card performace (it can be a
factor, but usually is not the major bottleneck).

My Canon G3 has been sitting in a drawer for more than a year for just that
reason. I bought a Sony W5, but that wasn't much of an improvement. I
replaced that with a Nikon D50. What a difference. No shutter delay and
complete control of exposure. I have been taking pictures of my grandson's
soccer games using 1/1000th of a second and an ISO of 800 on cloudy days.
Great pictures with absolutely no blur. Get yourself a DSLR. You will
notice the difference.

"Shutter lag" is a very vague term. You could be referring to how long it
takes for the shutter to open after you press the shutter button: this
depends entirely on if the lens is pre-focused, how suitable the scene is
for autofocus, and the camera's autofocus technology, and is entirely
beyond your control. Or, you could be referring to the delay between
shots, which is mostly dependant on the camera's buffer size, and only
depends on the speed of the memory card after you've taken enough shots in
a hurry to fill up the buffer.

What is the use of a 20 MB/sec card when NO CAMERAS can write that fast?
The lag has nothing to do with card speed.

I laugh when I sell a Extreme IV

I think he would be referring to time for single shot. Pre focus and
lock is fairly easy on my A95. That solves most but not all of the
problem. Add manual exposure and things are lot better, although I doubt
if as good as dslr.

When you are copying 2GB worth of pictures onto your computer a fast card
will make that go faster. Plus any bottleneck removed is better.
Especially if it is only gonna cost me a little bit more. What's $10 or
$20 over the life of the card and camera?
