I'm considering purchasing a Pentax *ist DL. Should I buy body only ?
I have a range of old Pentax lenses.
28-70, 75-300 both AF. 28,35,50
90macro, 500Mirror and 70-210 Tamron zoom all auto. Can I use all of these ?

Yes you can use all the lenses. The non autofocus lenses will work as long
as they have the electrical contact pin so the camera can read the aperture
setting (series A lenses). Older lenses, such as the M series, will fit on
the camera, but have no meter link to it.

You may consider getting the lens that comes as a "kit" package with the
dSLR bodies. It is 18-55mm. This is because the digital sensor in the camera
is smaller than the 35mm film frame making it give a narrower angle of view.
It is about a 1.5x factor, so, for example, your 28-70 lens on the *ist-DL
will have an equiv. angle of view of 42-105mm . The 18mm on the kit lens
give you back the wide angle.

It sounds like it. Any AF lens should work fine. Any lens with an 'A' on the
aperture ring will work fine, although of course no AF if it's not AF. Any lens older
that doesn't have an 'A' on the aperture ring will work, but there's an extra step you
have to do to meter. Similar way with an old screwmount lens.

If you like all those lenses you have, it's a no-brainer. The only question
would be if a -DS would be better. I bought Pentax so I could use my old lenses.

Seriously consider getting the extra money together and getting a Ds, you
will be much happier.

Tom-

Having that lineup of lenses, you are serious enough that you should
consider getting the *ist DS instead of the DL with its reduced features.

I have the DS, as well as a comparable lineup of lenses. It works with
them all, although the non-A lenses can only be used in full-manual mode.
I'm not familiar with the differences in the DL model. I can't predict
how it will perform with non-AF lenses, but expect it to work about the
same.

The 18-55 "kit" lense that came with the DS is decent and will extend your
capabilities at the wide end. I got it because the only locally available
DS came with it, and I didn't want to wait for a special order. I think
it is worth the price difference.

I have the 28-70 f/4 lens that I dearly loved. As soon as I got the *ist
DS out of the box, I attached the 28-70. It was like looking through
frosted glass. As far as I can tell, over the previous year a compound
lens element separated, and the glue that held it together is now part of
the trash I can see through the rear element. One other person in the
newsgroup has had the same problem with that lens, so it may be chronic.
If yours is the f/4, check it if you haven't used it in a while.

It is hard to find Pentax AF lenses around here. The local camera store
had a couple of Tamron zooms that were probably old stock. I'm sure he
was glad to see them go! I'm quite happy with the results using the kit
lens as well as the Tamrons.

What Tamrons did you get?

Pete-

I got the 28-105 f/4.5-5.6 and 100-300 f/5-6.3 zooms.

The main complaint is that when zoomed to 300 mm, there is sometimes a
problem auto-focusing in low-light conditions. Perhaps I expect too much
from the DS!

That should have been the ONLY complaint!

It is the lens not the body that is to be blamed. The max aperture at 300mm
is 6.3; the viewfinder should be fairly dark.
