If you shoot with a DSLR, what is your favorite "walking around lens",
and why that lens?
I have a 1dMII and I usually keep my 70-200 f2.8 IS L lens on it.
Yeah, that makes for a big "walking around" kit but I've gotten used
to it. Sometimes I swap to my 24-70 f2.8 L. But it seems like every
time I try to use the 24-70 as my primary lens I find myself shooting
on the 70mm end of it and often wishing I had the 70-200. I also have
a 75-300 lens as a "backup" zoom lens for when I do event photography.
My sweetie recently bought a 1dMIIN body. He's been borrowing one or
other of my lenses while he shops for his first lens. He likes
shooting on the wide-angle end more than I do, so he usually has the
24-70. This weekend he's shooting with a rented 16-35 lens. He's
thinking of buying one of these Canon lenses:
24-105 f4 IS L - ~$1000
28-105 f4-5.6 - ~$130
28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM - ~$220
28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS USM - ~$400
28-200 f3.5-5.6 - ~$400
28-300 f3.5-5.6 L IS USM - ~$2100
55-200 f4.5-5.6 - ~$200
70-300 f4-5.6 IS - ~$550
70-300 f4.5-5.6 IS DO - ~$1100
He's also going to eventually get one of the bigger L zooms, probably
the 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS, which also takes 77mm filters like my 2 L
lenses.
I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who uses 2 (or
more) of the above lenses on a 1D series body, which one you use more
often as an everyday "walking around lens" - and why.
Thanks!
jc

Well, I don't use them on a 1 series, I use some of them on a 5D, which,
with grip, is similar in heft.
>
> 24-105 f4 IS L - ~$1000
This would be my recommedation, it's my wife's favorite lens on her 5D, and
I borrow it a lot when we're not shooting together.
> 28-105 f4-5.6 - ~$130
Lousy lens, by all accounts. I've never used the lens, just seen the
results from others.
> 28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM - ~$220
Better than the f4-5.6 version, but digital shows its flaws badly. Had this
on a 10D, sold it when we got our 20Ds.
> 28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS USM - ~$400
This is my second recommendation for a lighter weight lens than the 24-105
f4L. Takes 72mm filters, though. I still have this lens, and use it when I
don't want the heft of my 24-70 or my wife's 24-105.
> 28-200 f3.5-5.6 - ~$400
Another one to stay away from, frim what I've heard, unless you just want
the focal length.
> 28-300 f3.5-5.6 L IS USM - ~$2100
I've not used this one, but it's big and heavy, a rather specialized
photojounalism lens. I used its predecessor, the 35-350 f4.-5.6L, ok images
considering the focal length, but really hard to handle without a monopod.
> 55-200 f4.5-5.6 - ~$200
Old lens, designed for old APS film cameras, not one of Canon's stars.
Never used it in anger, tried one on a 10D. Miserable.
> 70-300 f4-5.6 IS - ~$550
> 70-300 f4.5-5.6 IS DO - ~$1100
I've heard good things about both of these lenses, but 70mm might be a tad
long for the wide end of a general purpose lens. Never used either.

The only reason I answered is that no one else had. The only lenses you
list that I've actually used on my 5D are the 24-105, 28-135, and, as noted,
the 35-350, which is similar to what you listed.

At the moment my Nikkor 35mm f2D AF is my favourite "walking around lens" as
it seems to cover most situations I like shooting, and it is light &
compact.

Could you elaborate more on the differences you found between these
two lenses? Saving $600 sounds good, especially since I already have
2 longer zooms (70-200, 75-300) that cover the 100mm+ range and we
will eventually get a 3rd (100-400 prolly) and could put that $600
towards that lens. OTOH, it's nice to have a single lens that goes
from "somewhat wide" to a decent tele all in one lens.

How does it compare with the 100-400 L? We haven't had any problems
hand-holding that lens shooting sports photos (horses, soccer, etc.).

Your insights are great and I really appreciated that you DID answer.

I use a 1DMkIIN and like you own the 70-200 f2.8 IS L. My walk about lens,
however, is the 24-105mm f4 IS L, as I find it gives me a good range on a
1.3x sensor.
I only switch to the 70-200 if I know I am going to need/want the extra
reach and will not be able to "use my feet" to get the picture. This happens
rarely - my 24-105 is pretty much welded to my camera
I know a lot of people would prefer the 24-70 for its wider aperture, but
I'm quite happy to trade that in for the extra reach of the 24-105 for
general use. Others may have a different opinion of course...!
Good Luck. >> Stay informed about: favorite walking-around lens for DSLR |

Although on a lowly 5D, I keep the 24-105 on it most of the time. Having
IS is also a plus, although I don't own a 24-70, I used it for a
weekend, and chose the longer reach and IS.

It all depends on where I am walking.
Most of the time I use the kit lens, 18-55 but many times I choose the
10-22 on my Canon 20D

I like a 24 f2 on my 1.6 crop Nikon or a 35 f2 on a 35mm frame camera,
small and compact as a D200 cam get. If I want other lenses I carry a
70-210 f4 and a 17 f3.5 Tokina in a very small Tamrac bag. I feel a
prime gets you more involved with your photography, forces you to frame
rather than zoom.
If you need a zoom the 16-35 (though I don't feel it is very sharp for
an L lens, it is the reason I didn't buy Canon.) for a 35mm frame or
1.3 crop sensor. The 24-105 also makes sense, haven't used this one,
but it is an f4, that one stop makes a difference.

This one is on my camera 90% of the time.

I'm a pretty big guy and don't mind carrying a 500 f/4 with a tripod
most of the day (over my shoulder), but when I have the camera on the
strap around my neck the 1D M II and the 70-200 f/2.8 are just too
heavy after a while ... the strap seems to cut into my neck and chafe
it and it's hard to balance the lens and camera while it's just hanging
(lens keeps pulling the front down).
So for me this is not an acceptable "walking around" all day lens.
With film and 100 speed slide film I used to like taking two lenses, 35
f/2 and 85 f/1.8, and that worked great. You get used to framing for
just two focal lengths.
Recently I started using the 24-105 f/4 L IS and it's now my favorite
for this type of shooting and with digital bodies where I can bump the
ISO up a bit the speed loss isn't as big a deal as it is with film,
where I don't like any films faster than ISO 100. The weight with the
1D M II seems perfectly balanced and the combo isn't too heavy for
carrying around my neck all day.
So my answer (like several others on this thread, I see ... do I sense
a trend?) is the 24-105, which is a great lens except for wide open at
24 mm with full frame bodies. It's actually sharper than the 85 f/1.8
I used to love and with IS I can shoot down to about 1/30th sec at 105
mm with acceptable results.
I bought a second 24-105 for my wife for her (early) Christmas present
and I don't think she's taken it off her second digital body since she
got it.
Nice lens and my first choice.
Of the others on your list the only one I've used was the 28-105 and it
is not in the same league.

I use an EF 28-135 IS for my walk-around.
Bang for the buck, image quality, and weight, as well as a range that
suits my style, all make this (so far) the ideal walk-around lens for
me.

This is my walking around lens and has been for probably a
decade or so. Often when I go to Europe and want to travel
light, it is the only lens I take. My most recent image with it:
http://www.clarkvision.com/galleries/gallery.NEW/web/bear.creek.colora...c12.29.
I'll make nice 16x24 inch prints from it from a 1D Mark II.

A couple of things about the 100-400: it is a nice and flexible
lens (I have one--I'll sell it if you want it), but I wouldn't
recommend it. Mine is soft at 400, but others are sharper,
so test the one you get. Mine makes OK 8x10 inch prints,
but just OK, not super sharp. The 100-400 has a very undesirable
problem with digital bodies: when you zoom, it pumps air (and dust)
into the camera body.
A sharper, lighter and cheaper alternative lens, I feel, is the
300 mm f/4 L IS. It is a sealed lens and sharper that the 100-400
even with a 1.4x TC (=420mm f/5.6). The 300 is my lens of choice when
I want to travel light and not take my 500 f/4.
I have tested the 300 and 100-400 on film bodies as well as
10D and 1D Mark II bodies, and I get the same performance on
all bodies (the 300 outperforming the 100-400).
