I have a 72x72 dpi photo sent me by a friend that I would like to print.

What is the largest size I can print without having an obviously
degraded print?

Take the actual size, whatever it is, and multiply by 72. That gives
the size in pixels in each direction. Now divide that by 200 and that
is the max size folks recommend. Some say minimum of 300 ppi, but
often you can get a reasonable print at 200.

Or, divide 72/200, which is 0.36. Multiply the existing dimensions by
0.36 to get the size it can be reasonably printed at.

The answer depends on the size of the image in pixels and your perception of
what "obviously degraded" means.

Electronic images are not sent in dpi. They are sent in pixels.
Open the image in a photo editor e.g. Photoshop Elements, and look at
the H&W in PIXELS.
Divide those numbers by 300 for an excellent print, divide by 200 for a
very good print and divide by 100 for a satisfactory print.

That number is only a dummy placeholder, put there by the camera because
some software will barf if it is left out. It will be replaced with the
actual resolution of your printer when the photo is prepared for printing by
your printer driver or photo printing software.

What you need is the actual size of the photo in pixels
