Some of the respected brands of 35mm film camera were Nikon, Canon, Pentax,
Olympus, Minolta, Contax & Leica. Now that everyone is moving to digital,
I notice that most of these brands have fallen by the wayside, leaving us
with Nikon and Canon. The argument about which of these 2 is best has been
running for a while now. Are these the only 2 brands worth considering for
serious photography now that the world is going digital?

I don't know that I'd say the others have 'fallen by the wayside'. Sony
bought Minolta - I think their new model looks decent. Olympus is still in
business, last I checked. I think Leica and Pentax are still selling. What
to consider, I think, depends a lot on what you plan to do and how much
you're willing to spend. I don't consider the Kodak 'P' series to be
trash, but they are certainly not high end DSLRs.

No, but they make the best in the dSLR lines, but there are others and
some of them are not at all bad.

What are you looking for in a camera and what cameras have you used and
what lenses might you already have?

Haven't visited a camera store in a decade or two have you?

Contax is a dead horse. Out of business for a few years.

All the rest you mention are available at most camera stores.

Or do you only buy photography equipment in large electronic stores or
department stores?

Minolta, as a brand, is dead - was purchased by Sony last year.

Pentax is Pentax, Olympus is Olympus, Minolta is Sony, Contax I'm not
sure what they're doing, and Leica remains Leica.

Olympus, Panasonic, and Leica apparently have some kind of technology
sharing agreement--at least one model is shared between the three,
with minor variations.

This reads like a troll.

If you're doing "serious photography" then you should have a pretty
good idea what kind of subjects you are going to be working with, and
that should drive your decision. While there is broad overlap between
the systems offered by the various manufacturers, each has a few
pieces in their system that are specialized--if you need one of those
your decision is pretty much made.

I think if you confine yourself to C&N you are missing a lot. There is
no doubt that those two companies dominate the DSLR market but they may
not necessarily provide you with the "best" camera for your needs.

Many of the camera companies you mention are still around. Pentax, Sony
(formally KN), Fuji and Olympus are worth considering. Olympus, for
example, has an excellent array of made-for-digital lenses and rumour
has it all of their future cameras will have Live-view including their
Pro camera. Some provide in-body IS like the Sony Alpha.

What great news for Nikon since they are not in the top two in the
digital race. Canon is #1 and Sony #2 according to the latest figures
from the camera industry.

You might want to see the PMA (Photo Marketing Association) newsletter.
Or, if you can't get it, ask a camera store to show you the last issue.

I use Pentax. and Sigma / Tamron lenses.
I find the *istDl to be a great camera. In the not too distant future I'll
also be investing in the new PentaxK10d.

Check out Pentax. They have the best spec'd 10mp dSLR for under $1000.

I use Canon and it way exceeds my expectations.

As for choosing a DSLR, another thing to take into consideration is the
lenses available for it. Both Canon and Nikon do some great lenses.
