I've been doing everything on a laptop virtually forever but it's time I
have a nice desktop.

I'm thinking of a Intel E6400 CPU with 4GB of RAM for Windows XP Pro. I'd
like firewire on the motherboard. I want to run a two-monitor setup, of
which currently I have only one monitor which support DVI. So I need two
PCI-Express video cards. Which ones? Is 256MB per card enough? If I ever
plan on running Vista of course I would need 512MB per card to support Aero
without shared memory. Preferred motherboard brand is Asus but are there
others you like?

I world pay up to $2000 for the right system.

I don't mind building the system myself (my day job is IT afterall) but is
there anyone out there selling a computer like this right off the shelf?

Thanks!

No offense, but it seems to me you've got the thing backwards - buying a
new computer so you can run a piece of software?

Why would you buy two cards? I have CS3 and use a single nVidia Quadro
FX4400 to run two displays with DVI inputs at 1920 x 1200. The Quadro card
with 512MB works fine in XP Pro. Admittedly, this card does occupy two
slots. The drivers for Vista x64 aren't very good yet. Here's a list of
nVidia cards:
