The D80 has a better viewfinder and more pixels, if that is important
to you by all means trade up. Frankly if you can get decent $ for the
D70 it is worth it for the viewfinder alone.
The batteries aren't the same, I would expect the D80 to follow the
D200 with a bigger rear LCD. The D70s does have phenominal battery
life, my D200 5-600 frames per charge, second batteries are necessary.
Lenes should work the same, I believe they upgraded the AF for the
D80.

If you can afford to why not keep both?
For most uses the difference in sensor size is wholly irrelevant.
The D80 is somewhat easier to use because of a vastly improved TTL viewing
system (Nikon really cheaped out on the D70!).
It is very convenient to have two high quality dSLRs . . .

I've tried the D80 and the D70 and the D80's viewfinder is better but
I certainly wouldn't say it's $500 worth of better.

I think the issue with the D70's VF is the D70 is a digitalized N70, a
low-end 35mm film SLR. So it kept the N70's viewfinder system, simply
masking it off because of the D70's smaller sensor. So you get a
narrowish field of view, not all that nice. They later designed a new
viewfinder that gives a normal size view with the small sensor, and
used it in the D80. I think they also use it in the D40 (now that
they have it) so it probably doesn't cost especially more than the D70
viewfinder, except for the up-front development effort which hadn't
yet been made when they recycled the N70 viewfinder into the D70.

Bah, I meant N80, not N70. It was the D100 that was based more or
less directly on the N80; the D70 was later and changed more but I
believe it still had the same viewfinder. Thanks.

Nope, different. But you can still use the same charger, even though
the one that comes with the D80 is slightly different.

As for your point, almost everyone (myself included) thinks the 70 and
the 70s are nearly identical; certainly they have more in common than
the brand name. Perhaps you misspoke? If not, I suggest you post facts

Now, back to the topic, which was a comparison between the D70 (either
variety) and the D80. The largest single difference IS the viewfinder;
but not really because the D70 VF was derived from a film camera
(though it was) but because the D80 uses a glass pentaprism. The D70
and current lower models use a "penta mirror" which leads to light loss
and distortion. I suspect the lower magnification of the D70 VF was at
least partially to compensate for the light loss.

As for me, it's simple: I passed on the D70 because the viewfinder was
simply inadequate, at least for my eyes. I bought the D80 because I can
SEE through it!

Actually he was using "D70's" as a possessive, not a plural. ("D70's VF" . .
.. "D70's smaller sensor")

Yoshi was not addressing any similarity or difference between the D70 and
the D70s. He said only that the N70 and the D70s are entirely different.

He did. Paul is the one who misspoke, wrote N70 when he meant N80. He
cleared that up before you posted.

I made no comparison between the D70 and D70s. My post addresses the N70
which the original poster mentioned. That is a film body with amost no
similarity to the D70 or D70s. I do post facts.
You need to read posts before responding to them. You are the one who

I have both a D70 and a D80 and I find relatively little advantage to
the D80 other than slightly (and it really is slightly) better large
prints. The D70 appears to be better put together and seems more
robust. Both are excellent cameras.

Especially when used D70s aren't worth much. Less than a D40, which is
unexplainable.
