My Kodak Easyshare CX4230's memory got corrupted during my vacation
last week; probably because I took a picture with the batteries too low
from what I've read on Kodak's site. This must be the main memory as
there's no memory card installed - never has been.
It shows 16 photos remaining at medium resolution, lets me take a
picture and displays it on the viewing screen but doesn't seem to save
it and when I try to review my pics says "no images to display".
When I connect it to my PC I see a file and a folder on the camera
device, both with illegible characters for their names -- looks like a
string of 'y's with dots over them.
Kodak's site recommended using their easyshare software which I'd never
used before - always download and clear memory using Windows explorer.
So I tried that but either it's no help or I don't know what option to
use to fix this with Kodak's program.
Is there a way I can reset the camera and start over here? Hard to
believe a problem like this will ruin the camera.
Thanks in advance,

Doesn't the CX4230 have a Setup Menu with an option to format its
internal memory? You said that you don't use memory cards, which is
good, since some cameras will completely ignore internal memory if a
card is installed. On the other hand, assuming the worst and that
you'll never be able to fix and use the internal memory, you should
still be able to use the camera if you get a memory card for it.
Even a very small card should have much more capacity than your
internal memory and it should be extremely inexpensive. >> Stay informed about: kodak cx4230 memory corrupt |

First, you should be able to reset the camera. If there isn't any
method to do this in the manual, try formatting the internal memory.
Failing that, go buy a flash card for the camera (you should have done
that anyway). >> Stay informed about: kodak cx4230 memory corrupt |

Hi.
To reset the camera to factory settings, try removing the batteries for 24
hours.
Then afterwards reload them and in your menus look for and activate
"Format".
Do buy a decent sized card, in addition to the internal memory.

There doesn't appear to be a format option for my camera. I'm going to
contact Kodak tech support and see if they have something. Maybe there
is an executable they can provide to let me flash the memory?? Just
grasping at straws here.
I would like to buy an external card. My camera is a bit old at this
point though. Any ideas where I can look for one for my camera - Kodak
CX4230?
Thanks in advance,

Hello, Marty:
The CX4230 takes either MultiMediaCard (MMC), or the more popular Secure
Digital (SD) card. These types are readily (and cheaply) available, from
both online vendors and regular stores.
Good luck!

Greetings Marty,
Sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the CX4230.
Since the camera is reporting a problem with files, etc. yet you are still
able to take pictures but not see them properly, try clearing the memory
(format it) then format the internal memory. These are options found in the
menu. I would also suggest trying the camera with a memory card. If you do
not want to buy one, borrow one from a friend to test the camera. Or, visit
a local camera shop or computer store to see if they will let you try one to
test your camera. Of course be sure you a full charge on the battery before
doing anything.
Once you have formatted the memory, retry the camera to see if things
improve. If not, connect the camera to your computer with EasyShare running.
EasyShare should see the camera and let you connect to it through the Synch
and Transfer Manager feature. Using this feature try and update the
firmware. The firmware is now at version 1.05. With it you will increas the
speed in handling Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMedia (MM) memory cards and
..jpeg file creation date/time will consistently reflect camera settings.
It may also remedy your situation. If not you may have to get the camera
serviced.
Talk to you soon,
Ron Baird

Thanks for writing Ron. I have tried formatting the internal memory to
no avail. Also I've tried upgrading the firmware but the upload always
fails. So it looks like my internal memory is unusable to me.
The one thing left to try is a memory card, trying to get together with
a neighbor who has one, will write back with the results.
FWIW this is what the ezshare software reported to me:
firmware version 1.05000
capacity 14M
free 14M

Greetings Marty,
You have the latest firmware in the camera already.
Also, since you have tried the solutions suggested the only other option
would be repair. If that is the case, I would not repair the camera as the
cost of repair will get you a new camera that has more features and a larger
sensor. Kodak has a tradein program that will give you $50 toward a
different camera. The cameras are all refurbs which come with the same as
new items in the box, and new warranty. The cameras included are:
Kodak EasyShare C340 zoom digital camera (Class B): $119.00
Kodak EasyShare V550 zoom digital camera (Class B): $229.00
Kodak EasyShare Z760 zoom digital camera (Class B): $199.00
Kodak EasyShare P850 zoom digital camera (Class B): $279.00
If you want to follow that path and need help, let me know.
Talk to you soon.

Hi Ron,
Thanks for following through on this with me. I still haven't gotten
together with my neighbor to try his SD card. Isn't it still possible
that my camera might work with a card even w/o the memory working?

Hi Marty,
Anything is possible, Marty, but there must be something causing the
internal corruption. If you cannot format it, that is a problem. Try the
card, and a firmware update. You can use the card to update the camera but
be sure you have lots of power. This may help? The latest version of
firmware for your camera is 1.05. Check to see if that is what you have.
After downloading the firmware update to your computer and unzipping the
files,
1.. Download the firmware zip file to your computer.
2.. Double-click the file to start the WinZip Self-Extractor.
3.. Select Unzip to folder, and specify a location, or leave the default
location.
4.. Click Unzip. The firmware file unzips to the specified folder.
5.. Note! Remember the location of the folder. The file has a .fw file
extension.
6.. Close the WinZip Self-Extractor.
7.. Remove any files from the memory card.
8.. Place the memory card in the card reader.
9.. Open the drive corresponding to the memory card to view the card
contents.
10.. Check that a 'System' folder exists on the memory card. If not,
create one.
11.. Locate the firmware file on your computer and copy it into the System
folder on the memory card.
12.. Remove the memory card from the card reader, and insert the memory
card into the camera.
13.. Turn off the camera.
14.. Press the Power button on the camera, and follow the on-screen
instructions to complete the upgrade. The upgrade takes approximately two
minutes.
15.. Turn off the camera, and then turn it back on again.
See if the update, if you can do it, helps.
Talk to you soon Marty,
Ron Baird

FWIW, I had a similar problem with an Olympus.
I went round and round and round trying to get the card formatted
so it would work with no success.
Turned out that there was a loose solder connection on the card socket.
Slight variations in card thicnkess from different vendors made them
behave differently. Resoldering the socket fixed it.
