How do I take close ups. I activate the "macro" setting (the emblem looks
like a leaf.), but the nearest that I can get to the object with the camera
is about 5 inches and the zoom doesn't bring it any closer with any good
focus. Am I not doing something correctly or is this camera lousy for
magnified, close in pictures? Thanks.

How close do you need to be? I use this camera and it seems to work
just fine for me. Zoom out when using the macro focusing, but you have
to move back somewhat too. I've done great closeup shots of flowers
this way. The distance from the camera to the subject does not mean
the camera cannot take good closeups. It also means that you're not
right on top of your subject, blocking your light. With the maximum
zoom and macro it produces great out of focus backgrounds.

With my Kodak, 5 inches is about the closest i can get. I also find that
using the zoom doesn't help. That said, I have been able to get some
magnicifent pictures with the macro.

The closest focus of the 850 is 4"
That should give you about a 1:2 magnification.
Which should be very good for flowers and butterflies, but not bees,
flies, jewels, or other really tiny objects.
If you just MUST get closer, you can add close up lenses.
They usually come in sets of +1, +2, and +4 diopters.
They can be stacked to produce +1 to +7 diopters.
If the 850 does not have filter threads to accept the close up lenses,
you can probably "tack" them temporarily to your lens snout with "Fun
Tak", made by DAP

Much neater to get a screw in adapter for the front of the camera. It
screws into the body and is about one inch long, so the lens can zoom
inside it. They come with threaded end so you can just screw on
closeup lenses or filters. Kodak makes them for the camera but you can
get off brand ones on eBay for around $5.00 plus postage. They take
58mm filters. Some eBay sellers - mostly in China - offer the
adapter, a skylight filter, lens hood and a lens cap for around $13.00,
not a bad deal. Just do a search on eBay for Kodak P850.

I've added closeup lenses to my camera, and have shot a garden spider
that nearly filled the photo frame, and didn't have to get too close!

I've also got some generic batteries for this camera for around $1.75
plus $7.00 postage from US sellers. I have two extras that I carry
around with my camera.

This sounds like what we Oly owners called "lens armor."
