| I'm looking at the specs for the Nikon D40X and see that it says child
mode for flash. What does that do? Say cheese for you?
Camera Flash: AUTO, Portrait, Child, Close Up, Night Portrait: Auto
flash with auto pop-up P/S/A/M: Manual pop-up with button release
Guide number (ISO 100, m /ft.): approx. 12/39 (manual full 13/42)

I think that you're misinterpreting the camera's Child mode into a
Child mode for the flash. Download the D40x's manual to be sure.
The D50's manual also mentions a Child mode, and the description is:
> Child: Kid Pics in Living Color
>
> Use for snapshots of children. Clothing and background details are
> vividly rendered while skin tones remain soft and natural.
> • Camera selects focus area containing subject closest to camera.
What you quoted (after "Camera Flash:") seems to indicate only
that the D40/D40x's flash is operable in those modes. For instance,
Landscape mode wasn't mentioned and I assume that the D40x has a
Landscape mode. The D50's manual states that for Landscape mode :
> Landscape: Capturing Nature's Majesty
>
> Use for vivid landscape shots that enhance outlines, colors, and
> contrast in such subjects as skyscapes and forests.
> • Camera selects focus area containing subject closest to camera.
> • Built-in flash and AF-assist illuminator turn off automatically.
How old are you? The last time I heard a photographer say "Say
Cheese" must have been nearly 50 years ago. On the other hand it
has been that long since I've been near any professional portrait
photographers. >> Stay informed about: What is child flash mode on Nikon D40X? |

Old enough to remember the photographer saying cheese at my aunts
wedding back in '64. What do they say now? I was offered a job as a
portrait photographer once but wasn't interested in taking photos of
annoying teens with braces getting their grad photos taken. That's one
way to ruin a photographers creative spirit.
I would still rather have the swiveling lense but am now considering
DSLR seeing as they have a better sensor and lense. Still think the
swiveling lense has more creative potential though. They should really
take that camera a step or two further and outfit it with better
lense, better CCD and an LCD that one can actually see in sunlight.
Has any DC manufacturer created an LCD that one can read in direct
sunlight yet?
Thanks for explaining what the child mode is. I suppose that mode
could come in handy. >> Stay informed about: What is child flash mode on Nikon D40X? |

The convenience flash is sometimes useful. For a low-end D-SLR, where
the buyer may never go beyond whatever the kit includes, the pop-up
flash is essential. >> Stay informed about: What is child flash mode on Nikon D40X? |

Not nearly as old as Martha Raye, mama! But boy, do I know dirt.
I'm a regular pica pro. And speaking of incontinence and pica, for
some reason it conjures up images of Southern Maryland Stuffed Ham. >> Stay informed about: What is child flash mode on Nikon D40X? |

Yes, they have their purposes for a quick and dirty fix in low light
conditions but that's about it. I guess they can be useful as a fill
flash too if you can control the flash output. >> Stay informed about: What is child flash mode on Nikon D40X? |

The best trick is to stare right at a kid and warn them, "Whatever you
do, DON'T SMILE." Works every time.

Rita - you can't clean your place very often
50 years ago I was 24 - those really were the days.

Well, I will NEVER forget what the photographer said to get a smile from
us for our senior class pictures. We went in one at a time, and he
took the pictures, and we went out another way, so we didn't get to talk
to the ones waiting. When we sat down, and he got ready to take the
picture, he said 'Pussy, Pussy, Pussy'. Not one frown on any of the
guys in any senior class picture! Wonder what he used on the girls??? >> Stay informed about: What is child flash mode on Nikon D40X? |

These days he'd probably get banned from the school forever if the
principal found out. Political correctness has taken over. At the local
elementary school, a couple of years ago they did a production of "Annie
Get Your Gun." The principal went non-linear over the name of the play,
demanding that it be changed to something like "Annie's Wild West Show."
The director, a parent volunteer, stood her ground. On all the posters
for the show, they had a disclaimer about how the school district does
not support the use of guns, blah, blah, blah. I suggested that they
take a cue from the Woody Allen movie _Take the Money and Run_ and
rename the play "Annie Get Your Gub." >> Stay informed about: What is child flash mode on Nikon D40X? |

<g> I do hope that you realize though, that you replied to the
sock puppet troll message forger's message, not to mine. He
probably isn't old enough to have any idea who Martha Raye was
(almost, but not quite the female equivalent of Joe E. Brown) unless
he's a TV commercial aficionado. >> Stay informed about: What is child flash mode on Nikon D40X? |
