Planning to get a digital camera. Total novice. Want to use it for
vacation photos and want it to last many years. Seems like a710 or
sd630, sd600 are most popular. Which would you recommend? a710
apparently has a poor screen, sd630 has a nice screen, but not view
finder so i'm afraid if the screen broke it would render the camera
useless, so thinking of the sd600 instead. On the other hand the a710
is a bit bigger so it might be more rugged and last longer.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

I only have experience with the sd600, which I've had for a few weeks now
(replaced my old s230), but you need to ask yourself what you're going to
use the camera for. If you need an ultra compact like the sd600, then go
for that. If you need more of a zoom range or IS, and are not concerned
about the size of the camera, then the a710 might be better. Though from
what I see online, the a710 doesn't look like that big of a camera. I have
a few cameras, so I can use the camera that fits the situation. The great
thing about the sd600 is that you can put it in your pocket or get a belt
case, and you hardly know it is there. It might encourage you to carry a
camera more often. For me, if I am going to go biking or or to a party,
I'll take the sd600. If I'm going to a family gathering or sporting event,
I'll take one of my other cameras. But if I had to choose just one camera,
I would probably get one that had more capabilities than the sd600, even
though I would have to sacrifice size.

I'm a novice too, but I got the A710 IS and am glad I did. I am still
learning everything it is capable of. I know it is not an SLR but man it
has to be close (except for lense exchanging and I think it can do that w/
an adaptor).

I had a Kodak prosumer and it didn't touch this prosumer. This camera takes
great pictures! 'makes me look good at photography. Hey, but like I said
I'm a novice. But I highly recommend the A710 IS. It's the coolest!

Hi,

Have you checked out the Canon SD800? It has a 4:1 zoom range with 28mm.
equivalent at the wide end, real Image Stabilization, & a zooming
optical viewfinder as well as a sharp LCD screen. I'm greatly enjoying
it, having stepped up from my previous SD 500. Whatever you get, do buy
an extra battery. Li ion batteries are great, but can poop out suddenly,
usually in the middle of a picture session. I therefore carry a fully
charged spare battery with me.

Good luck.

I bought the A710 and am very happy with my choice. Terrific camera.

The A710 also takes 2 standard AA batteries.

I have a 710is and am very satisfied with it. Don't worry about
having a viewfinder in case you damage the screen, if you do you're
better off buying a new camera. The zoom range is great as is the IS
feature. I prefer cameras that take standard batteries (just in
case), so that limited my selectuions, most ultra compacts have
proprietary Lith Ions.

Hi,

The Li ion battery in my Canon SD 800 is good for 75 photos or so. I
always carry a spare battery in my pocket, in case I need it while
taking pix. If you take more than 150 pix in one shoot, then of course
it can be a problem.

I tend not to take many photos, so the self discharge rate of NiMH batteries
proves to be incontinent for me. That and lugging a recharger around with
me and remembering each night to charge them.

Instead, I use Energizer Lithium AA batteries which are about 2900 mAh. I
took a 2 week vacation and a single set of 2 in my A710 lasted the entire
vacation and about 700 pictures (a mixture of flash and outdoor).
Presumably good NiMH AA batteries would last nearly as long.

You don't have to recharge them every night, if you're not using them
much! This self-discharge thing is way overblown, partly because some
batches of cells have been defective. Normal NiMH self-discharge
becomes noticable after months, not overnight.

I think that another type of discharge is associated with
incontinence. Smile

Then you may want to try the new "Eneloop" type NiMH batteries.
They're compatible with any standard NiMH charger and have a low
enough self discharge rate that they'll have most of their charge
left even after sitting for a year or two. Their capacity is lower
than the latest high capacity NiMH cells, about 2,000 to 2,100 mAh,
but two sets of 4 cells will cost far less than lithium AA batteries
over the life of the A710, and should be good for significantly more
shots than you took over the two week vacation. So if you use that
type (also sold as "Hybrid" batteries by RayOVac) you wouldn't have
had to bring the charger with you, and wouldn't have to remember to
charge the batteries just before leaving for vacation. You would
have been fine if the batteries were charged last Easter. Smile

As you said sometimes 150 shots is not enough, aside from the
number of shots provided, I just like the idea that in an emergency I
can stop in the local 7-11 and buy a set of AA's. I also have a fear
of all things proprietary ever since I bought an IBM 386 computer,
with their MCA bus which could only use IBM stuff for upgrading.

Well ok, but you were speaking about taking a charger when you travel
and remembering to use it every night. You could instead charge up
the NiMH batteries before you leave and then leave the charger at
home. Take a set of lithiums along just in case.

Those batteries are indeed interesting. If they work as advertised, I may
switch from lithiums.

Thanks.

I understand but my point was that I don't take pictures very often, and
when I do, it's often not planned, only to be greeted by dead NiMH batteries
that haven't been used in months.

Lithium batteries have a shelf life of 10 years.
