Is this a bug with these cameras? I have to choose download one by one
to get all the pics downloaded.

You might want to get a card reader rather than using the Canon
software. Solves a lot of glitches that downloading from a camera
causes.

Could it be a problem with your software, or how your're using it?

Unlike other brands, when you transfer photos directly from
Canon's cameras, you use Canon's software (Imagebrowser or
Zoombrowser). The camera only supports Canon's PTP (Picture
Transfer Protocol), meaning that unlike other camera brands, the
card in the camera doesn't resemble a hard drive to the computer,
and so you can't use standard Windows programs (such as Windows
Explorer) to transfer files, but must use Canon's software. If this
software is buggy or broken, or you aren't completely familiar with
how to use it effectively you might have problems such as you
describe. Where does the problem first appear? Are you able to
select *all* of the files, but they don't all transfer, or are you
only able to select individual files?

There is one other potential "gotcha!". The A510/A520 manual
states on page 108:

> • All procedures performed with a connection to
> a USB 2.0 compliant board are not guaranteed.

It would be really bizarre if this is the cause of the problem,
since a computer's USB 2.0 port should be backwards compatible with
older USB 1.1 ports. In any case, there is no hint in the manual
that the camera's USB port is anything other than a slow USB 1.1
port. As such, you'd be much better off getting an inexpensive card
reader having a USB High Speed port. Then you could transfer all of
the picture files much more easily using any software or browser
that you wish, and the files will transfer many times faster.

Is that only in the more recent Canon cameras? I have not had any
problems using the CF card from my A80 in a card reader and seeing it as
a drive. Granted, I do use their Zoombrowser software most of the time,
but never had any issues doing otherwise.

You've misunderstood what I said. When the CF card is in a card
reader it *will* appear to be a drive. When the CF card is in the
camera, it won't simultaneously be in the card reader, and when it's
in the camera you'll need to use Canon's software. If the card is
in a card reader, you're free to use any software that you wish,
even the disappointing Zoombrowser.

I have no canon software loaded on my winxp system and download all my
pictures from an A95 or A40 with no problems using windows explorer.
Canon do NOT mount the camera as a drive, I which I believe is referred
to as MSC mode. My Sansa .mp3 player can be configured to look like a hd
(letter assigned) or as something called MTP which I suppose is media
transfer protocol, so I assume Canons run in this mode.
When in this mode, the connected device will show in windows explorer
with an appropriate name, but does not assign a drive letter and I don't
believe it shows in my computer. When opened in this mode in windows
explorer the actual directory structure is not shown but all the image
files are listed and the directory misc. Other devices will display info
appropriate to that device.
Note: when camera is connected, the camera and scanner wizard launches.
I always cancel this, if you chose to use it, it will download all the
pics but insists on creating a directory in a location of your choice.
People who like to file by date might prefer to use this.
Given a choice, I would prefer a device to mount as a drive letter but
it's no big deal. For many pics I use a card reader.

Ah, ok. Yes, I did misunderstand what you were saying Smile Very true
that it won't appear as a drive while in the camera.

I actually like Zoombrowser as a lightweight program for organizing my
photo files. Nice to have a graphical view of the folders and
subfolders. I sure don't use it for any editing or processing though.
And I have mixed feelings about the way it 'tags' files on the camera's
card to mark them as having been downloaded already, because I have
missed downloading some images onto another of my computers when I was
being lazy and used the automatic settings instead of selecting them
manually. Smile

I have a copy of the Pentax s/w from my new K100D (happy Xmas to me!),
which I am still trying out to see if I like it or not... I haven't
played with shooting RAW (yet), so I don't have ANY opinions on their
conversion/editing program.

I tried using Zoombrowser several years ago but it operated far
too slowly. My computer at the time was much slower too, but
appropriate for its time, about 7 years ago. That was when not all
computers had USB ports, and in fact for at least several days (or
was it weeks?) I was stuck using a *slow* serial port to transfer
pictures from camera to computer. I don't know if this has changed,
but when I used a file browser to reorganize pictures into different
folders (Zoombrowser did this far too slowly, seeming grinding away
forever), the end result was that Zoombrowser became totally
confused and it was only with some difficulty that I managed to get
it to recognize the new picture locations.

Congratulations with your new K100D! Just a few days ago I
almost succumbed to DSLR fever, vacillating between various Nikon
bodies and lenses. But I got some rest, the fever abated, and I'm
back to my old plan which was to upgrade by the end of this year or
early next. In the meanwhile, my Fuji and Canon P&S cameras' only
real weaknesses are related to lack of speed, not image quality, so
they'll be more than adequate for the next year or so. By then I
might want to wait a bit longer to see what replaces the D80 and
D200, and the 18-200VR might be available in sufficient numbers to
bring its price back down to what it originally sold for.

I've been pretty happy with the A80, until a colleague gave me copies of
some gorgeous shots she took hiking in Montana and I could compare them
to my best quality shots... Then I dithered around for a few months,
trying to decide whether I wanted to upgrade to a better P&S or go for
the Pentax (we have a good lens collection from olden days). The
spousal unit ended the indecision by heading off to our local camera
store... Smile So far I really like it. When football season rolls
around again, I am looking forward to getting some much better shots of
the Iowa State University Marching Band!

They were certainly hapless this year... Sad Oh well, we go to see the
band performances anyway, so even when the Clones lose the game we get
what we came for.

Hello, Jim:

Well, with a new head coach (Gene Chizik), maybe Iowa St. football will
improve markedly, in the next few seasons.

Good luck, except when Nebraska visits Jack Trice Stadium, in Ames! Smile

Not happening this year... Our home games will be Kent State, UNI,
Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, K-State, & Colorado. The Clones are visiting
Lincoln again (Sept 29), maybe we'll go and watch 'em beat the Huskers
at home. Smile Hey, it could happen...
