Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital, others (more info?)

I wonder if any of the camera enthusiast in this newsgroup knows which
Point and Shoot camera which has the best zoom button. I found that
some toggles or buttons for zooming in and out are difficult to use.
Is there a digital camera which which has two level zoom to fine
tuning the zooming action? The zoom button in a Canon G7 is difficult
to use (too small), and not very smooth. Either you need a very
steady hand, or you end up getting frustrated to achieve the picture
inside the frame that you want. Perhaps a push button + or - zoom
toggle is better than the toggle around the shutter release button? I
notice that Panasonic Lumix FZ50 use a manual zoom ring (like zooming
in digital SLR camera lens). Is there many other P&S camera which has
similar zoom feature like FZ50.
Thanks for info

You can always move closer or further away for fine control.

A lot of this is personal preference - how big are your hands, etc. I love
the really long zoom on the Canon S3. You can find them under $300, since
the announcement of the S5. Pick one up at a local photo store and see if
it doesn't feel good to you. I happen to prefer the zoom rings on good
DSLR lenses, but the S3 does a good job for something in its price range.

The S6000 / S6500 and S9100 / S9600 ultrazoom cameras also have manual
zoom. I have the now discontinued Fuji S9500 and I find the manual zoom
very convenient to use.

I'm a FZ50 user and it's a wonderful action.

I'm also a Fuji fan, and I believe the S6500fd has a similar action, as
does the S9600.
