Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

Does the in-camera panorama assist/stitch feature work well? Or am I
better off using PC software?

I'm considering buy a new Pentax Optio, but have noticed they
discontinued the feature on their new products. My Optio S5i had the
feature (rarely used at the time), and I've seen the feature offered
on competing models. The prospects of using the feature seem
important to me. But I can't help but wonder why Pentax decided to
discontinue the feature. Perhaps the in-camera assist was not that
good, and I could get far better results by taking the photos
manually, and using PC software.

I'd like to know what others have experienced, and if anyone knows why
such a nice feature would be removed from the cameras?

Thanks,

Jake

Most 'panorama assist' modes must superimpose something in the
viewfinder to show recommended overlap. I have done panos for years,
even back when shooting film, and never had any assistance. With
automatic cameras, you need to watch the settings, and the light.
Cloudless days are the best, and setting the camera on something (a
tripod is best), and rotating it to give about 30% overlap works well.
PC based pano software will do much more than any camera can possibly
manage.

I think you've both missed the question, apologies if I'm wrong. I read
the post as the op believing the camera built in assist does all the
work AND the stitching. This of course is not so. The built in assist
shows a recommended portion of the image for optimum overlap and in the
case of canon names successive shots in this mode for utilization by
their included software. I only ever used it once and found it very easy
to use. Having got a good result on the monitor, getting it printed was
another matter and a discussion for another day.
To summarize, it is an assist, but by no means mandatory. I can only
speak for the canon setup and haven't attempted to use alternate software.

Hello, Dave:

My Kodak V603 does the stitching, itself. I've only tried its panorama
mode, a few times, and with little success; even using a tripod, I'm
still unable to align the images, properly.

More practice is required, obviously. Smile

Have you tried AutoStitch instead of the V603 firmware/software?

I think the Canons also "lock in" the exposure calcualated
on the first frame for all successive frames.

Hi John,

It can get tricky. Personally, I have used this camera as I gave it to my
girlfriend. I set it on a tripod and loosen the head just a bit. The tricky
part is keeping the scene within perspective so when you bring the panorama
features into play it is as close to the preset image data that is included
to help you align the shot. the tripod does a good job, but you can do OK if
you keep a good stance.

Hello, David:

No, I haven't seriously attempted any panoramic pics; I'm just a
dabbler, mostly.

Thanks, for the suggestion, anyway.

John,

That software is so simple and easy to use, it's ideal for the "dabbler"!

<G>

Most of my use is just making a wide-angle shot from two, three or four
images, and not strictly panos as such.

Cheers,
David

Hello, Ron:

Thanks, for your response. Actually, shortly after purchasing the
V603, I got lucky and made a successful 2-shot panorama -- and that
has hand-held, besides!

Alas, my (few) subsequent efforts have all been failures, despite
mounting the camera on a mini-tripod, in some cases.

Although, I'm pretty sure I'll get the hang of it, eventually. <g>

Hey John,

I would be glad to share with you if I had any cameras. I only have access
to the new cameras coming to market and none that available. The days of
giving cameras to supporters has long gone. Kodak is so finely tuned that
such options do not exist. But, I do appreciate your interest. My offer was
more in the way of intellectual sharing. I have a lot of that. Smile
