The fruit of the Minolta "partnership" is on the way....
Standby for a stunning display of technology, G1, H7 and H9 [and a
bunch of others] are on the way.......
Did/nt think SONY was going to be only a 2 bit player in the D/C
field.

Too bad they were given the best line of meters on the market and they are a
0 bit player there. They were also given the second best line of photo
scanners and they are a 0 bit player there, too. I guess 1 for 3 is better
than 0 for 3...maybe they'll be as successful as they were with the
Betamax...no, bad example...maybe 8mm...oops again...I know they'll be as
successful as the MD that replaced the CD worldwide...wait, that didn't
happen either...oh well, maybe it'll be at least as successful as their
breakthrough in the flash memory field, the memory stick and memory stick
pro! >> Stay informed about: SONY is back in the game... |

Sony is featuring the Sony Alpha 100 which is just the next generation
Minolta DSLR and running it head to head with Cannon and Nikon. It is
100% compatible with all Minolta autofocus lenses.

Certainly nimor in the camera stakes, and their A100 is a sad attempt, some
of their P&S's are certainly nice.. >> Stay informed about: SONY is back in the game... |

Not for me. I was already disillusioned with Sony because though they
make cool stuff, quality control is seriously flawed - pretty much every
single Sony product I've purchased in the last 5 or so years has broken
('cept for the earbuds). Then there was the rootkit. Then there was
the CCD recall which affects (hundreds of?) thousands of cameras and
camcorders, including Nikon and Minolta. They refuse to honor my recall
request because an APO "isn't a US address". And the battery recall,
which, fortunately, only almost affected my Fujitsu laptop, but which
affects a similar number of laptops.
At this point, I completely refuse to buy Sony products, despite the
fact they do put out some cool stuff. Can't trust it to last. My most
recent purchase, a camcorder, has broken twice - both times for known
issues.

And let us not forget the damaging malware on the Sony CD releases some
years back. I'm avoiding buying anything new from Sony for the
forseeable future. >> Stay informed about: SONY is back in the game... |

I think that's what he said when he said "rootkit" or did Sony do yet
somthing else!
I too stopped buying Sony after a couple of top end walkmans, a handycam and
micro cassette recorder all died with little use and no abuse. That was in
the 90s. According to consumer reports, Sony DCs a the best in reliability.

Same for me. Their technology is often very good but the build quality
is terrible. Other than a couple of Trinitron TVs, I can't recall any
Sony product that I've owned lasting longer than a year. Tiny plastic
parts break, electronic components burn out, dry solder joints crack,
grease hardens, or delicate mechanics clog on dust. >> Stay informed about: SONY is back in the game... |

Some of Sony's equipment is surprisingly well built. Most of
their cheap portable CD players have died prematurely, in
consistent, predictable ways. The high end CD players (aluminum or
magnesium bodies, optical output, rechargeable gumstick batteries,
both NiMH and Li-Ion) are built much better and keep running
reliably. Their small MiniDisc recorders may be among the most
complex mechanical products they've ever designed, yet I have one
that has logged several thousands of hours of recording time and is
still in perfect condition. I doubt that DAT recorders could have
lasted nearly as long without needing to have replaced their
expensive heads several times. >> Stay informed about: SONY is back in the game... |

A local retailer here has been selling (not grey market) a100s, either
as body only, or with 18-70 as a kit for less than half the price of
Nikon D80 body or kit with cheap 18-55. Excluding tax thats a little
over US$600 for the body, about US$700 for the kit, vs current price of
D80 body of about US$1250 (grey market d80 price is about US$870) Here
(new zealand) is usually a higher priced market, so that is an
incredible price for the a100.
I don't know whether that's an act of desperation by Sony. Perhaps
people have seen the prices for the new lenses. >> Stay informed about: SONY is back in the game... |

My Sony minidisc player developed a sagging battery compartment latch
within the first year I had it. Had to tape it down to get proper power.

Hello,
Actually, Sony is the digicam industry's primary provider of image
sensors (not the entire "electronic guts"). Therefore, it's far from
being "THE player."
