No, that is not normal. One thing you need to be sure of is that the
batteries are fully charged. Try using them a couple of times then charge
them again. Are you charging them on a dock for the camera or by charging in
a battery charger. What kind of batteries are they? If you are using a
charger, what kind of charger is it? How often do you use your camera?
Knowing this will give a little insight to your issue. In reality, even
using the many features of the Z712is, you should get more then 40 pictures.
