Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

I´m in a pinch. I filled up an entire 1 GB XD card with my Fujifilm
Finepix Z1 camera; everything was working fine. I took the card to an
internet place to get the pictures burnt to CDs and the card reader
wouldn´t recognize the card!!!! I reinserted the card into my camera,
and was prompted with a ¨Card Error¨ message.

Are these pictures lost and gone forever? Should I just try to
reformat the card so that I can continue to use it? Is there ANY
chance that I might be able to salvage the pictures from the card?
Are there camera shops that have the knowledge and expertise to
extract photos from a corrupted memory card?

Please help!

IMHO - your best shot, short of paying a lot to have a rescue service look
at them would be to have your friendly neighborhood Linux geek have a look.

If the camera won't recognize the card you should try it in a card
reader. If you don't have one, they aren't very expensive. If your
card is Type M, most card readers that can accept xD cards are
probably compatible. If it's a type H card, you'll have to make
sure that the packaging of the card reader states that it's
compatible with Type H cards, since it's a newer type of card that
older card readers won't be able to read. If the computer can't
read the card there's little or nothing that you can do to salvage
your pictures. If it can see the card without errors, you might be
able to copy the picture files to the computer. If not, there are
utility programs (some commercial, some free for the downloading)
that can attempt to recover deleted files. There's no guarantee
that the program will succeed with your card but it's worth trying.

Some file recovery programs mentioned by others here, and which
may be freeware are:

http://vaiosoft.com/products/recoverymanager.html

http://www.z-a-recovery.com/

http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html

http://www.artplus.hr/adapps/eng/downloads.htm

This one isn't free but it was said to work where others failed:

http://www.stompsoft.com/recoverlostdata.html

Don't know if this is freeware or commercial:

http://www.jufsoft.com/badcopy/digitalphoto.asp

This one is commercial but was said to be able to run in a
no-charge trial mode up to 25 times:

I hate xD cards because they have this weird problem. If the computer
modify the contents of the card while it's in the card reader, the
camera will refuse to read the card. It will show the "card error"
message you described. By "modify contents", I mean anything like -
write a file, delete a file, rename a file, etc. This could happen
accidentally, eg if the computer has a virus, or if you choose "view
thumbnails" in Windows Explorer (because this creates an invisible file
called thumbs.db on the card).

If this is the case, you just find another computer with card reader,
copy all the pictures off, and burn it to a CD. Then reformat the card
and continue using it.

Or it could be the second (worse) problem. If the xD card is removed
too fast from the card reader (or even the camera), when the
computer/camera is writing to/reading from it, you'll get the "card
error" problem as well. The difference here is, no other card
reader/computer will be able to read the card. Consider all the photos
lost. Reformat the card.

With other cards - compact flash, SD, MMC, memory stick; if you pulled
out the card while the camera/computer is reading it, nothing happens.
If you pulled out the card while the computer/camera is writing to it,
the file that's written half-way is damage, the rest are fine. But if
you do it with an xD card, the entire contents of the whole card is
toast. This is what stops me from buying Olympus and Fuji digital
cameras. If they'd only junk the stupid xD card and switch to SD/MMC
like everybody else, I'm sure they'd sell a lot more cameras.

You've got a good imagination, but unfortunately your fantasies
aren't very useful.

Correction. Not fantasies. Hallucinations. Either that or your
timing's off by almost two weeks.

One thing he said may come to fruition. New Fiji models have a dual xD/SD
slot. It sounds as if Fuji is migrating away from xD. Fine by me! I have 3
digital cameras, a Canon dSLR, a Canon and Fuji compact. Each one requires a
different card.

Some of the card readers come with photo recovery software. Check the
package before purchasing.

Dual slot cameras aren't new. Fuji has had cameras with dual
slots for several years. I don't know if their S7000 was the first
or not, but I believe it, and the S9000 that followed have CF and xD
slots. Olympus and other manufacturers have had dual slot cameras
for several years, so while Fuji may intend to abandon xD cards,
that their new models are also dual slot cameras isn't really good
evidence that that's where Fuji is going. A big strong hint would
be if they introduced a dual slot CF/SDHC camera. <g>

I also have cameras using 3 different card types, CF, SD and xD.
The 64MB and 80MB CF cards I used in one camera were never even
remotely considered for use in another camera that has its own 1GB
and 2GB cards. Same for the SD cameras. One uses 512MB and 1GB
cards, the other, nothing less than 2GB. Other may, but I have no
desire to have a pool of cards all of one type, shared by all of the
cameras. My old 4x and 8x CF cards won't ever see the innards of a
newer camera. I also don't mind that my Fuji camera uses xD cards.
Anyone that decides against buying a perfectly fine camera based
solely on the type of card it uses probably is making other foolish
purchasing decisions as well. Note that "erqua", who hates xD
cards, has made several bogus claims about them. It would be
amusing to know what other biases he has. Some people refuse to buy
cameras that use AA batteries, others refuse to buy cameras that use
Li-Ion batteries. If he's in one of those camps, his choices will
have been narrowed even more. DSLR or P&S? Optical VF or EVF or
neither, just a large LCD? After all of the objectionable cameras
are removed from consideration, he may end up with no choices other
than wonders from Bell & Howell and Sigma.

You need to buy, find, beg steal or borrow a card reader that recognizes
that card.
Try this recovery program:
http://vaiosoft.com/products/recoverymanager.html

It's the best of the freebies I've looked at. I use PhotoRescue, does a
very good job but does cost to register. I registered before I
discovered the freebie stuff. PhotoRescue will tell you if it can
recover (but not let you do it) prior to registration.
If everything you try fails, see if card vendor can help before you
write to card.
