When I first saw this picture, I said to myself "Eeks. That's the
worst job of photoshopping that I've ever seen"

http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov/images/gallery/aerogelhand.jpg

It sort of makes you wonder, doesn't it.

It looks like someone out of a really bad, sci-fi movie from the '60s.

It's obvious that it has NOT been altered in any manner.

Don't you understand?

It is NASA explaining to us that the moon is *indeed* made of blue cheese.
This is a sample brought back by Neil Armstrong. Since then, it has aged and
become translucent with time.

I would suggest a nice Shiraz...

I remember seeing this pic a while ago, and the description of the material.
Not sure it's fake; could be real.

It is a real material though, and if you google for it most of the
pictures/videos look fairly similar to the one you showed...

No, doesn't make me wonder at all. It is a picture of a glasslike
substance called Aerogel. Which is the least dense substance todate. It
is 98% empty space. It is an incredible insulator and was used in the
stardust mission to capture cometary particles and return them to earth.

I've held the stuff and it is very light. A piece like that probably
weighs a gram or so.

Google Aerogel and see for yourself.

It looks to me like they scanned it from a halftone print in a book
and were not very clever at anti-alliassing it.

When they use Photoshop you typically get at least two identical
thumbnails and a long essay extolling the virtues of Adobe stuffed
into the header. Sometimes extra thumbnails creep in depending on the
workflow.

The image you quoted was not encoded by PhotoShop at all (Adobes
encoder leaves a telltale signature), but by a JPEG codec using IJG
quality level 75.

The aerogel material is real enough. Sort of like a solid tranlucent
lightweight mist of silicon. The image encoding is rather poor. It
looks a lot more realistic at when rendered half size after
downsampling.

Depends on what the image is for?

It's called frozen smoke, or solid smoke, and is the lightest solid
known to man. Or woman, for that matter.

Neat, I'd never heard of that. I think it's intentionally bad to
emphasize the surrealness of the material. It looks like a scanned high
ISO film shot, trying to push the limits of acceptability. The ugly
fingers & nails in the classic 'hand model' shot, the oversaturation,
flecks of dust, hairs on the forearm...
