I guess everything didn't freeze solid.
Now there the boy is in focus. That shot does have a certain appeal.

Let us know when you post the compressed and downsized versions. So far
none of your photography is ever worth the bandwidth for any full-size
versions. >> Stay informed about: Winter Night |

The light drops off rather dramatically, which is sort of dramatic but
also kind of looks wrong, like a light bulb was a couple feet off the
screen. Not to be too critical, it does have a certain appeal. There
aren't any harsh shadows like you'd see from direct flash, so that's
nice. There are catchlights in the eyes, one in the light side, two in
the dark eye. The dark eye is black other than the pair of small
reflections - that looks odd. The light falls off to black on the back
part of his body. >> Stay informed about: Winter Night |

Thanks, Paul, that's a very helpful description. It sounds
like I got most of what I was after.
Given that the theme of the pic was "Winter Night, I was going
for the contrast between the white of the snow and the black
of night.
I had hoped for a better expression on Mich's face, but I
snapped the pic after a fairly long walk, and we were both
tired and ready to head inside. I'm just happy the focus is
good. Given the f/3.5 aperture, I was afraid the wrong parts
would be sharp. What I was after was a harshly lit face, with
both the focus and light falling off as the eye runs towards
the right. I was hoping enough of his harness would show up
to keep the eye interested in the darker areas, at least
enough to check out some of the deeper shadows.
I've been trying for a while to get the light to trail / fade
to black on the right, with part of his rear leg showing, but
the actual delineation between his body and the background to
disappear. I suppose that's not to tough to do with Photoshop,
but a bit trickier to do sans retouching.
The thing I skrewed up the most, as usual, is framing. I had
wanted to get a bit more foreground, and was disappointed that
his paw ran off the bottom edge, slightly. The 8 x 10 crop
worked, sort of, but I would have liked to get him more
centered so that I could have had more cropping options.
Oh, well, at least things are moving in the direction I want.
Once again, Paul, thanks for the description. It was great.
Take Care,
Dudley >> Stay informed about: Winter Night |

Ah, that is why the Slime always posts only overcompressed,
tiny versions, that are available only for hours at best.
Please show us an uncompressed and full sized version of that
beautiful rare moth. (It's not worth 10 byte bandwidth, but
don't let that stop you.)
