I just got the PowerShot A710 I exchanged for my Digital Rebel. I am
very happy with this camera despite its lack of swivel LCD but am
concerned about the following review from CNET. I don't understand
what it means. Could someone tell me if it means that the 710 requires
an additional lens to be *at least as* capable as my "old" A620 of
shots at the A620's widest angle capability?

Do I need an additional lens? I honestly don't understand what this
claim means.

Asaar, you're the heart as well as the brains of this newsgroup. Thank
*you*.

The A620 has a 7.3mm to 29.2mm lens, which is equivalent to having
a 35mm to 140mm zoom lens on a 35mm film camera. The A710's lens is
5.8mm to 34.8mm, equivalent to a 35mm to 210mm zoom lens on a 35mm
film camera. So at the widest zoom setting, both lenses have the
same field of view. Canon has a Wide Converter Lens (WC-DC58N)
which can widen the len's range by 0.7x, equivalent to a 24.5mm
focal length lens on the same overly familiar 35mm camera. Smile This
adapter lens is designed to work with both the A710 and the A620.
The lens adapters needed to mount the lens on the camera are
different according to the manual. The LA-DC58F is needed for the
A620 and an LA-DC58G for the A710. The TC-DC58N is a 1.75x
telephoto lens adapter that also works with both cameras, extending
the zoom ranges to 245mm and 368mm these two cameras.

No, you don't need it. As mentioned above, it goes just as wide
as the A620, but you might want it if you find that a 35mm focal
length isn't wide enough. Also, be aware that when using a wide
angle lens adapter, there will often be interference with the lens
partially blocking the camera's built-in flash when used at the
wider focal lengths. You can get lens adapters from other
manufacturers but you have to know what you're doing, as many of
them are of much lower quality than what Canon and other camera
manufacturers provide. Since 35mm is not particularly wide, many
photographers might be tempted to get a wide angle adapter despite
the additional weight, expense and inconvenience. I have Fuji's
0.79x lens adapter, which allows its 37mm to 370mm lens to go as
wide as a 29mm lens, not nearly as nice as the 24.5mm focal length
you can get with adapter for Canon's cameras. It's has a *big*
impressive looking hunk of glass on it, but all things considered,
it would be better to have a camera that can go below 28mm without
using an adapter, as you may not always have the adapter with the
camera when it might be needed. There have been several that went
as wide as 24mm without using an adapter, but I don't know if any of
them are still currently available new.

The Canon A620 has an optical zoom range of 35-140mm (stated in 35mm
eqivalents). The A710 has an optical zoom range of 35-210mm (35mm equiv.)

Just goes to show how useful it is to download manuals, even for
some cameras that you might not have decided to get.

You're welcome, although it must be said that there may be a few
of my favorite grouches here that would rather brain me than thank
me. Smile Also, in case it wasn't clear, the cameras that I was
thinking of that had the really wide zoom lenses weren't made by
Canon. I can't recall all of them, but Nikon's Coolpix 8400, with
its 24mm - 85mm lens is one. A bit short on the long end, though.

Ha! I love that commercial. Hopefully I just got a light shower; I
love this camera. I don't know how low the Digital Rebels are going to
have to go, price-wise. The sheer fun of a LCD is something I
underestimated greatly.
