The A620 has a 7.3mm to 29.2mm lens, which is equivalent to having
a 35mm to 140mm zoom lens on a 35mm film camera. The A710's lens is
5.8mm to 34.8mm, equivalent to a 35mm to 210mm zoom lens on a 35mm
film camera. So at the widest zoom setting, both lenses have the
same field of view. Canon has a Wide Converter Lens (WC-DC58N)
which can widen the len's range by 0.7x, equivalent to a 24.5mm
focal length lens on the same overly familiar 35mm camera.

This
adapter lens is designed to work with both the A710 and the A620.
The lens adapters needed to mount the lens on the camera are
different according to the manual. The LA-DC58F is needed for the
A620 and an LA-DC58G for the A710. The TC-DC58N is a 1.75x
telephoto lens adapter that also works with both cameras, extending
the zoom ranges to 245mm and 368mm these two cameras.

No, you don't need it. As mentioned above, it goes just as wide
as the A620, but you might want it if you find that a 35mm focal
length isn't wide enough. Also, be aware that when using a wide
angle lens adapter, there will often be interference with the lens
partially blocking the camera's built-in flash when used at the
wider focal lengths. You can get lens adapters from other
manufacturers but you have to know what you're doing, as many of
them are of much lower quality than what Canon and other camera
manufacturers provide. Since 35mm is not particularly wide, many
photographers might be tempted to get a wide angle adapter despite
the additional weight, expense and inconvenience. I have Fuji's
0.79x lens adapter, which allows its 37mm to 370mm lens to go as
wide as a 29mm lens, not nearly as nice as the 24.5mm focal length
you can get with adapter for Canon's cameras. It's has a *big*
impressive looking hunk of glass on it, but all things considered,
it would be better to have a camera that can go below 28mm without
using an adapter, as you may not always have the adapter with the
camera when it might be needed. There have been several that went
as wide as 24mm without using an adapter, but I don't know if any of
them are still currently available new.
