I have done that with toner, but does ink work. How about the old Canon
smearalot?
I also tried Scotchguard but theres been different versions of Scotchguard.
They don't use the same Scotchguard chemical any more, buts its still in everything
and everybody.

Gepe Ink Jet Fix puts a waterproof coating on any ink jet paper.
Tetenal Spectra Jet ink jet papers are water proof after a few seconds
of the ink hitting the paper with any ink jet printer.

I use basically the same technique for for taping maps and directions
to the tank of my motorcycle. You don't want to slow down too much in
a light rain or else you start to get rain on your visor. In a
ziplock, they stay perfectly dry so you can keep going! >> Stay informed about: Waterproof paper for map printing |

Print your maps on the paper of your choice.
Don't worry about the ink either.
When you're done, spray both sides of the map
with KRYLON clear sealer.
It's a plastic base sealer that will
permeate the paper, and seal in the ink images.

I've done this as well for signs that had to hold up to the weather for a
few weeks. Worked great.
I used whatever clear spray I had handy.

Office Depot (and other stores) sell self-sealing letter-sized
laminating pouches. No heat is required. You can even mark spots on
the surface and erase them later.
I have a package of GBC 11 9/16" x 9 1/16" that I just purchased.
I also use the smaller sized self-sealing laminating pouches for
wallet photos. With two very young grandchildren, it's a great way to
seal a photo and carry it around. If I'm going to bore people with
pix of the grandchildren, I don't want to show them cracked and folded
pix.

Sorry...didn't notice you're in the UK. Viking and EurOffice carry
GBC products. Check for "SelfSeal Repositionable Letter-Size
Laminating Pouches". Here, it's product #3747202 but the UK A4
product will have a different number.

I wasn't thinking color. I use b&w maps on my motocycle and haven't
gotten lost yet due to lack of color. Okay, that's a bit cynical,
sorry, but do you really need color for a walking map? Just a thought.
I generally try to go for "low tech" solutions because they seem to
work better for me.
BTW, I've used Krylon on photos and didn't have the luck I wanted.
When it got a drop of water on it, the emulsion pulled off and left a
big white spot. But the Krylon kept the spot that pulled off all in 1
piece. but it was photos paper, too, not regular paper with a much
better absorption. >> Stay informed about: Waterproof paper for map printing |

>>What printer??
Canon ip5000.
I've just placed an order for some "Toughprint" (tm) waterproof paper which
I believe is similar to a product distributed by National Geographic in the
US. It was expensive but as well as being waterproof it claims other useful
attributes for mapping - for example being easy to roll or fold but tear
resistant. It is specifically marketed as suitable for maps and I have seen
some good reviews.

Thanks for posting the followup to a good question. You got a
comprehensive view of ways to achieve this.

Perfect solution. If I need two sheets, I guess I could print both sides
and get them to walk backwards as and when necessary.

Don't ask me. I can only suppose that the coating lets ink through in one
direction only. Toughprint make separate products for inkjet and laser
printers but there's no mention of any special ink requirements.

This may be a viable solution bit I don't have access to a colour laser
printer or photocopier. I don't really want to go to the trouble or expense
of getting it done professionally in the high street. I'm trying to work
around the resources to hand, viz my inkjet printer.

Nope. Given that the inks themselves are water soluble, I'm surprised the
paper makes much of a difference, but that's what people are reporting.
I'm only reporting that both the HP and Epson dye inks I've used are trashed
by water on plain paper and generic glossy photo paper, but that pigment
inks aren't.
So I'd guess, pigment inks on "waterproof" paper would be the best of all
possible worlds. (But, by Murphy's law, maybe waterproof paper doesn't hold
on to pigment inks as well as generic paper does.)

The other thing, though, is that even with dye-based inks on non-waterproof
paper, _some_ of the ink will remain in place, and at least for black-only
line art, I'd think a readable image might remain, even with kayaking...
