I want to get some waterproof paper for my ink jet printer so I can print
walking maps and not have all the colours run if the weather takes a turn
for the worse. I'm not too worried about the paper being very heavy weight.
I'd like to be able to fold it easily and a rarely use a map for more than a
single trip. Image quality isn't an issue provided the map is legible.

A quick trawl of UK internet sites has brought up a wide price range from
just under four pounds for 20 sheets to nearly 15 pounds for 25 sheets.
Does anyone have any first hand experience of waterproof papers. Do you get
any extra benefit from the more expensive papers? Anyone care to suggest a
good value for money waterproof paper, preferably available for order in the
UK.

Keith

Forget waterproof paper all together.

Think about getting a laminator.

Just have it printed at your neighborhood Photofinisher.
You end up with a conventional silver halide print.
They are processed in water.
Give it a good spraying with Krylon or other clear lacquer for good measure.

Why? I've got some commercially-produced Tyvek maps, and they're really
nice. Foldable, indesstructible, light. If I could print on Tyvek with
my pigment-ink printer, I'd be a happy camper. When I looked a couple
years ago I couldn't find Tyvek in letter-sized sheets. I suppose
there's a good reason for that, but I didn't discover it.

Get it printed onto the back of a T-shirt - give it to a walking partner &
get them to walk in front of you - sorted!!

OK they might get a little cold but hey they won't be lost Smile
Er....HTH

BTW you could look at printing on Tyvek but that's probably pretty
specialised stuff

Sounds like a horribly expensive way to get a single-use walking map.

I do waterproof maps for day trips all the time. I just
use the ordinary paper and coat it with krylon clear
matte finish #47120. I've been using this for a very
long time, back to when I used to use it to prevent
toner from a laser printer from smudging on stuff like
business cards. Works really well and is quite cheap.

If a paper is waterproof, they how would an inkjet printer
print. I suppose there may be other ink types.

But, they do sell Tyvek envelopes, so Tyvek comes
in forms other than cloth. Well I suppose a Tyvek map
could be folded into a ball!!
Tyvek is polyethelyne fibers.

The trick is to use a porous surface that lets the ink _in_ but doesn't let
it back out again.

I suspect that most inkjet printers will have trouble printing on Tyvek.
There are many papers purpose-made for inkjet printing maps and the like
that will be used outdoors.

I'd think that your problem would be more a matter of the ink than the
paper. If you print with a pigment ink printer (e.g. Epson R800), your maps
won't run, but if you have a dye ink printer, they will. Whatever paper you
use. At least that's the experience here.

I've soaked some prints for days, run water over them, and they didn't
run. On other papers, same printer (dye Epson R300) inks washed right off.

So it's possible, but mileage will vary. What printer??

Easy enough to make small test strips on variety of papers.

Have you tried it with purpose made waterproof papers for inkjet printers?
As an experiment I tried immersing a piece of HP glossy photo paper and it
held the ink until the coating itself softened and started to come off, and
that took a while. Others report that some of the Epson photo quality
papers are completely waterproof.

One person reports printing on waterproof paper using the cheapest printer
he could find and then taking the resulting maps kayaking with no problems.
He reported that on initial wetting there was fading which produced spots,
however if he after printing soaked the print for a while to pre-fade it
then that problem went away.

My group of whitewater kayakers has had good luck with Adventure paper
in an Epson R800.

Summary: "I used Adventure paper in the R800. I found the red ink ran
just a bit, but by and large, I'm pretty happy with it."

My process for defeating the weather gods is to print maps on standard
paper and then trim them to fit into one gallon size clear plastic
ziplock bags. Two back-to-back maps will fit nicely. I've used this
method for years, quite effectively, for both backpacking and
canoeing. An added plus while canoing/kayaking, is that if you drop
them in the water, they'll float with the contained air.
