Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital, others (more info?)

A small alert for those of you signed up on Steve's Digicam Forums at

http://forums.steves-digicams.com/forums/index.php

If you ask them to remove your account not only will they refuse to do
so but they'll lock you out from sending them messages to ask again
and the ability to post any requests publicly. Why should this be a
warning? Because they then feel it's fun to now send your email
address that you used to sign up there to several spam agencies
online. I didn't get any spam for four years in the mailbox account
that I used to sign up at Steve's Digicams until I tried to get my
account removed from their forums. Then immediately the spam started
rolling in. I never had my user settings there set to show my email
address to anyone. This is how I know that the administrators did
this.

They should have a new header on all their forums, "Welcome to the
Forum-hell California", you can check in but you can never leave.

If you want to lose your mailbox to spam just sign up to Steve's
Digicam forums then ask them to remove it, watch what happens.

One good reason to use a DEA when handing out an addy to anyone. I haven't
used my Comcast email address in years since I learned about the advantages
of Spamex.

Then you are unaware that Comcast now has just about the best spam
filtering I've experienced in nine years/five companies of the same
physical broadband cable into my house. I have no anti-spam filtering
other than Mozzy's email client junk filter, which only reroutes it
into another box, yet I get less than a dozen spams per week. I
realize Comcast has some flaws, but spam is no longer one of them.

You can duplicate Spamex for free using a hotmail or gmail account and then
have Outlook or Outlook Express check that address for mail. If you get
over-ridden with junk mail from the hotmail/gmail account, just don't have
Outlook/OE check that address. Get a new one and set Outlook/OE to look for
the new one. Same functions as Spamex, no annual fee.

I still get SPAM addressed to a Comcast addy I never use, I just got some
today as a matter of fact. It must be originating from Comcast as far as I
can tell. With Spamex I can tell exactly where the SPAM is coming from. If I
use a particular addy to register at a forum or I give an addy to a friend
and I get SPAM addressed to me from an addy I handed out I know who gave it
to them. I had a friend get infected with something that got into his
address book and I knew that day what happened before he did. I turned off
that addy and my problems were over.

Are you aware that Spam comes from Comcrap? Comcrap is one of the worst
ISPs around for Spam. Comcrap sells your personal information like everyone
else. Comcrap is no better than any ISP in any way shape or form. Look at
the assholes that hang on that Comcrap group for example. Some of the
employees are jackasses to begin with.

I will have to think about that one for a moment. You may be right but the
last time I used Hotmail I got more SPAM from them then anyone else. Is
Gmail webmail because some places you need to supply an email addy to will
not accept webmail addresses for verification.

Gmail is a webmail service. I haven't had much of a problem with spam on my
Hotmail accounts and I have had them for a long time. But, I don't use them
very much either.

You don't have any friends. Therefore you hang on the Comcrap group with
your boyfriend Dr. Feelgood.

Gmail does have the facility of using plus addressing, eg
alanclifford+thisisusenetspam@gmail.com which will go to the alanclifford
mailbox. This is useful for having different addresses for different
purposes.

Have you used either account for the purpose of registering on forums and
sites that need verification?

There is no "either" account. It is just one account. I don't use gmail
very much as I use my own mail server where I make extensive use of
plussed addressing. alan+jonathon@clifford.ac will get to me as though it
were sent to alan RemoveThis @clifford.ac. Well almost - different filtering applies.

I find that some websites, particulary commercial websites, are badly
programmed and insist that the + sign is invalid (I am often tempted to
tell them that " -@^@- "@purse-seine.net is a valid email address but I
guess that would confuse them even further). There does appear to be a
further benefit - the spamming communitity doesn't appear to use the +
sign.

( If replying by mail, please note that " -@^@- " may be spamtrapped.

So what you have is nothing like a DEA remailer account like Spamex. You
simply have a web mail account.
