Use a supported card reader?

If it's a supported version of Win98. Win98SE supports USB, some
earlier versions of Win98 don't. I used a card reader for a long
time with unsupported Win95, but that's because I had a card reader
that had a SCSI interface, not USB.

Another solution for vct would be to buy one of the portable CD
(or DVD) burners that are designed to be able to archive the
contents of memory cards to CD. I assume that the Win98 computer is
able to read CDs. Yet another solution would be to look for a legal
copy of Win98SE, usually sold at pretty low prices on eBay or at
computer flea markets. That would provide the USB support, and then
only a cheap USB card reader would be needed.

I'm assuming this is a USB connection. Contrary to what many people
think, USB has been available since Win95 OSR2, however it was somewhat
flaky until Win98 SE.

Your best bet is to use a universal Win98 USB mass storage driver, this
should make any USB device show up as a removable disk drive so you can
get the files off it. Here's one place you can get such a thing:
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

If you have problems with it, uninstall any manufacturer-specific USB
drivers first then try again (This is explained on the above page). It
thing should work fine with mp3 players, USB sticks, cameras etc.
Obviously it won't give you any product-specific functions that the
manufacturer's drivers might have done such as firmware updates or
webcam functions etc. that some cameras are able to do.

Despite the "Windows 98 USB Mass Storage Device Drivers" title of
that web page, the word "universal", implying that it will work with
all (earlier) versions of Win98 wasn't used on that page. It says :

> You should note, that these drivers are generic, and they may not work with

Buy a card reader. Lots of them include a driver disk for Win 98.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't buy a Sony product if I was paid to do so.
They are living on past glories, and their customer services is
non-existant.

Windows 98 is EOL (End of Life) and no longer supported by Micorsoft,
hence they do not make software available for third parties to develop
applications (i.e. Sony). While you should be able to find a card
reader that works with win98 and supports your media format, you still
have issues. Win 98 is no longer being patched, current virus
scanners no longer work with it and in short your machine is a sitting
duck... waiting to be attacked. I would not connect a Windows 98
machine to the internet in the current age. Time to buy a new machine.

Among other card readers that are available, the SanDisk ImageMate 12-in-1
card reader (model number SDDR-89 V4) seems to support Windows 98 without
any issues.

I currently have that card reader working in Windows 98 Second Edition, and
it even reads SD cards formatted by newer digital cameras that otherwise
caused slow reads or read errors with an older Lexar Media USB 2.0
Multi-card Reader (part number RW018 Rev D).
