Voices of Color

Have you seen those Voices of Color commercials for Walmart? Tired of its
hillbilly image, the mega-retailer is now marketing a collection of movies
especially for 2Pac and Sistah Souljah. Here's what the website says:

In a world that is becoming more diverse and global everyday, Wal-Mart
recognizes that not only do people move to the beats of different drums,
they also express themselves as drummers. Through varied styles and
cadences, these drummers play out a symphony of differing beats, and make a
richer, more meaningful rhythm for the world. As more drums are beat, more
people are heard, more issues are discussed, more viewpoints are recognized
and more common ground is found. To help facilitate finding that common
ground, Wal- Mart presents the Voices of Color Film Series, a unique,
multi-dimensional program that aims to give "voice" to a broader and more
positive depiction of African-American images, via a wide spectrum of
quality programming for the whole family. The series, which will include
films ranging from timeless classics to contemporary favorites, is designed
to highlight the breadth and depth of the African-American experience while
being sensitive to the sensibilities of African- American consumers.
Wal-Mart is proud to play a part in encouraging, supporting and promoting
the assorted beats and different drummers within the African-American
community.

I swear, I didn't make that up! So, what's on the list of Voices of Color
movies? Let's take a look!

* Queen of the Damned, starring dead "rapper" Aiiiyaaalaaa, about a vampire.
* Blade, starring Wesley Snipes as a vampire.
* Training Day,starring Denzel as a crakk-smoking corrupt cop.
* The Mack, starring Richard Pryor in a classic Blaxploitation
film as a pymp/stoolie.

* Coffey, starring Pam Grier, in yet another blaxploitation film about a
female pymp.

So, will these movies help us all to find common ground? Will they give
"voice" to a more positive depiction of African American images? Will they
highlight the breadth and depth of the African-American experience? As a
Eurepean American, here's what I have learned about the African American
"experience" from listening to the Voices of Color:

* Vampires and zombies are cool.
* Pymping ain't easy!

I don't know about you, but I feel a lot more diverse and global, and the
rhythm of my world just feels more meaningful. Excuse me while I go beat my
own drum!
