Hello,
Someone has donated an Epson 2200 that has been out of use for quite a
while maybe a year or more. I can't get it to produce a good nozzle
check pattern despite many cleanings. I suppose it is clogged; status
monitor says all the carts are above 20% full. Is this something worth
pursuing?

Replace all the cartridges and clean again.

No. Printers are a dime a dozen. You've probably already spent more
money in printer ink to do those cleanings than it would to buy a new
printer!

Might be worth trying
1) damp cloth underneath the heads, overnight sometimes works
2) Cleaning head with alcohol
3) Calling Epson and see what a head replacement would cost, if it is
less than $200 I'd do it.

Not for a 2200.
They are over $600!
One of those dime-a-dozen printers won't quite match a 2200's output.

We recent experience with a Canon S800, which is a similar construction
would suggest not! It looked like it had be fixed but can't do an entire
A4 - gets 75% through a perfect print and the cops out!! More expense
damnit!

As a last change, try manually cleaning with alcohol. Can't hurt, the
printer is toast anyway.

It should be an excellent printer - especially on matte and fine art papers.

Have cross-posted this to comp.periphs.printers

There is a regular contributor to that group - Arthur Entlich - who has
detailed instructions on cleaning heads on (Epson) printers.
IIRC you need to email him at e-printerhelp (at) mvps.org and he will
send instructions by return email.

However, he posted on 15/8/06:
"To try to avoid frustration some feel when they email me and I do reply
as soon as they believe it should, I wanted to supply a heads up, that I
will be unable to respond to email or on line questions for about a week
from today. As soon as I again have access to my email, I will slowly
try to respond to the requests I received.

Sorry for any inconvenience this causes

Art. "

I suggest that you wait a few days and then send him an email.

I had the Epson 820 photo with 6 inks. Produced beautiful prints, but I had
to waste half the ink in cleaning (yes I turned it off at its own power
switch). I had to remove two screws and two sets of ribbon cable to pull the
head out. Soaked a rag in alcohal and wipped down the head. Put it back in
and ran a couple more cleanings and it was fine - until the next time!

I got mad one day and pitched it in the trash. I haven't regretted that yet.

What printer do you use now? I'm waiting for the day my current Epson's
nozzles clog to find a different printer.

I'm not familiar with the Epson. I had a Lexmark and had limited success
by soaking the head in a pool of ammonia solution (use a jar cover or
empty jar). I found this such a pain compared to my laser printer that I
chucked the ink jet and upload images to an on-line service. Laser
printers run for ever and I can live without color.

Thank you for that helpful insight, we all had assumed he donated it
because it was working so well he couldn't stand it!
I'm sure your feedback will help the new owner get it working. It's
helpful people like you that make a community like this work!
