Hi all
I am wondering what kind of B+W filter I need for the Nikon 16-85mm
f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX ED VR. This lens has 67mm front thread but with the wide
angle, I would say the Slim version of the B+W 67mm UV (MRC) be the best
choice. The Slim version has no front thread. which probably means you can
mount lens' hood.
My 2nd choice is the regular B+W 67mm UV (MRC) with front thread. The
potential problem of using this filter is vignetting in wide angle focal
length.
Any suggestion? Thanks.

Of course you may want to ask yourself if you really want a UV filter at
all.
The camera sees little or no UV so it will not likely be useful as a
filter. The need for a "Protection" device over a lens is greatly over
rated. The damage caused by a scratch or chip on a lens is also greatly over
estimated. That said there are some situations that I might recommend one,
but not for most people's uses.

You answered your own question. The slim is definitely the best way to go. I
tried both and the slim gave better results.

Thanks, Don. But can this lens' cap fit the slim version filter? I heard
from some reviewer on Amazon complaining about slim filter with the
16-200mm. He was not able to use the lens cap with the filter (no front
thread), so he returned the filter.

A normal filter should be fine. 16mm isn't really so wide on Dx, the
filter thread is close to the front element. Also, the supplied bayonet
hood doesn't need the filter thread.
OTOH with digital, there's seldom any reason to ever want to stack
filters, so it probably doesn't matter. >> Stay informed about: UV filter for Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX ED VR |

Hi Frederick
Thanks for the suggestion. I thought a 16mm (equivalent to 24mm) required a
slim version of filter. In FX, would you not use a slim filter for your 24mm
lens?
I agree we don't need to stack filters anymore in digital photography
