Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

Recently, I picked up a couple of toys, a Wallace Expodisk and a
Canon Speedlite 430ex II, and just had to try them
out.

In order to put the Expodisk through it's paces, I took Mich to a
local mall and shot a quick pic in the foodcourt, nothing
extraordinary, just a shot of Mich in the middle of some nasty
mixed lighting.

Off to our left were some flourescent lights, above us some
halogens, behind us some big windows / doors, and I through in
the flash just to mix things up a bit more.

I used the Wallace disk to set the white balance, and then took a
pick of Mich as he lay on the floor next to my
table.

I seem to be getting fairly accurate at getting the focus points
where I want them, which has been enabling me to get better
focused pics, as well as better exposed ones.

in this one, I set the exposure comp to -2/3, as I wanted to
place the active focus point over a darker area of Mich's facial
area, which I wanted to locate somewhere around center to
center-right of the image. With the metering mode set to
evaluative and the AF point over a darker area, the slight
under-exposure would be needed to keep the camera from lightening
up the image more than I wanted it.

The flash was set to normal exposure. With the shooting mode set
to the P position, and the lighting not too dark, the camera
should have defaulted to using the flash for a mild fill
effect.

With all the above in mind, I'm just wondering how the colour
balance, focus and exposure turned out. I know SZ is going to
rant about the lousy composition, but it's just a test. All I
did was hold the camera down by Mich and used the autofocus to
hunt around until I found his head. With the active AF point set
to the upper, center-right position, I figured his head would be
just about where I wanted it, with the selected aperture yielding
a mildly out of focus background.

Like I said, it's not a work of art, but I hope the overall
exposure and colour look good.

BTW, as mentioned above, this shot illustrates that I am
getting the hang of fairly accurate placement of the AF /
metering points. Not only can I track down and focus on the
subject I select, but I can find specific tonal areas. As
such, my shots should start showing improvements in both
composition and lighting.

Not bad for a blind guy, if I do say so myself.

...

Next up, I'm leaning towards a speedlite 580ex II or the on-
camera trigger, the ST-something or other (sorry, I forget the
exact model number).

I'm leaning towards the 580ex II as it should enable me to
start setting up some nice lighting scenarios (especailly if I
throw in my old 540ez, in manual mode).

Still, I'd really like to get a cam with better ISO
performance, something like the 7D or the 5D2. With either of
these cams, I could actually use my residual vision to set up
a few low-light shots, which would be incredible.

I just posted them, and sometimes it takes a few minutes for
them to show up on line, especially if I post them in between
midnight and 1:00. I think my webhost does maintenance around
then, or something similar.

They should show up soon.

They all worked fine for me.

I'm not seeing Dudley's original post, so I'm commenting here--focus
looks good--you can see every hair on Mitch's head. Mich's cheek (or
whatever you call the side of a dog's face) is overexposed and there
seem to be some other smaller blown highlights. There's a lot of noise
in background.

Thanks, I appreciate that info.

The blown highlights are probably from the flash.

I underexposed the exposure by 2/3 but left the flash set to
normal, as I expected it to just do a bit of fill. If the
highlights are blown, it appears I should have underexposed
the flash as well.

I'll try something similar again, and see if that fixes the
problem.

As for the noise, I'm guessing that's from shooting at ISO
1600 in a rather nasty mix of different types of light sources.
But, if that's the extent of the problem, then the Wallace
Expodisk seems to have worked fairly well for setting the
white balance.

Once again, thanks for the details.

Take Care,
Dudley

It's you. Download a flea collar and the images will no longer be

Hmmm, I'm not sure what to say. Does the following link work?

http://www.blind-apertures.ca/images/SnowDaySmall.jpg

The only thing I did differently this time, regarding post
processing and uploading, is to shoot in RAW only, then use
Canon's utility to convert to jpg, hence the larger than
normal byte count of the full-size jpg file.

While I was using the Canon prog, I also converted the image
into a tif format and later converted the tif to png using
IrfanView. (just curious if all that processing would yield
any issue seignificant enough for some one to comment on.)

The smaller jpg was converted from the larger jpg using
IrfanView.

Is it possible for the Canon utility to do something your
browser isn't compatible with, something significant enough to
survive a couple of subsequent conversions in IrfanView?

Take Care,
Dudley

Actually, I think his expression is one of fixed concentration.
My daughter was standing behind me holding a doggie biscuit,
which he knew he was about to get...

As for the over-exposure, I was testing my camera and flash.
When set to the P mode, the cam is supposed to use the flash
as fill. But, when shooting in snow, a normal fill flash
exposure yields grayish snow with a properly exposed subject.

I like the affect, but others like "white" snow.

Over-exposing by a stop yields a nice balance of subject and
background, with brilliant white snow, but, unless there is
some sort of light point in front of an animal subject like
Mich, I haven't had much luck getting that twinkle in the eye.

I was trying to use my flash to provide just a hint of fill
light while simultaneously over-exposing the pic to get the
nice white snow with a nice sparkle in the eye.

It didn't work, as you can see, just over-exposing the image.

Still, my daughter liked the shot and wanted to see how much
of it she could save using PhotoShop. It was just an
experiment for her to try her hand at photo restoration.

Take Care,
Dudley
