The first thing I learned when I was a sports marksman with handguns, was to
get to know what my dominant eye is. This is important, because your pics
may come out better or worse if you do or donīt use your dominant eye.
The trick is as simple as effective:
Look PAST any object to a more distant object with both eyes OPEN.
Now close one eye after another and see with which eye you see the same
picture as with both eyes open; this is your dominant eye, which you should
use to take pics. >> Stay informed about: TIP: shooting with your dominant eye |

Without an optical viewfinder I use both eyes. Nice tip though. I
needed all my "RAF marksman" skill to target a small bird in a tree at
max zoom the other week whilst testing my new camera out. >> Stay informed about: TIP: shooting with your dominant eye |

You can adapt a Red Dot aimer to use with your camera,
great for following rapidly moving targets. >> Stay informed about: TIP: shooting with your dominant eye |

I first became truly aware of the 'dominant eye' thing about 20 years ago
when my father gave me his motorcycle. I had to adjust the rear view
mirrors since he was left eye dominant and I'm right eye dominant. >> Stay informed about: TIP: shooting with your dominant eye |

I was actually thinking of a modification of this. My dogs don't stop
barking until I squirt them with a water bottle. Has anyone ever
designed a laser-guided squirt bottle? I don't want to miss them and get
my couch wet. >> Stay informed about: TIP: shooting with your dominant eye |

Eyesight can change over time, or illness.
I had a minor stroke some years back that
knocked out about ten percent of my right eye,
it's almost like a prmanent shadow at the top
of whatever I see with that eye alone.
With the left vision is great, and not too bad
using both eyes. >> Stay informed about: TIP: shooting with your dominant eye |

Why adapt ? Just use the gun. A permanent, effective solution.

There is a problem with your suggestion. I'm left-eye dominant and I like
to shoot sports with both eyes open so that I can anticipate where the
action is headed. If I use my dominate eye on the viewfinder (which I much
prefer to do), then with most cameras, and certainly with the Canon dSLRs
that I use, my right eye is blocked from seeing the action by my right hand
that has to be on the shutter release and focus buttons. If I hold my
right eye to the viewfinder, then my left eye has a good view of the scene
in front of me. I think that camera manufacture's need to make a mirror-
image model of their cameras for people who are left-eye dominant. >> Stay informed about: TIP: shooting with your dominant eye |

I agree, thereīs not much for left handed people.
But I always aim to please:
probably this sounds rathcer silly or stupid, but have you ever concidered
to hold the camera upside down? Just for really critical shots, it should
work. The pictures can be rotated and the camera doesnīt care.
Or maybe a remote controller? Not sure if they AF too. >> Stay informed about: TIP: shooting with your dominant eye |

My high school had an HSROTC rifle team, and who wouldn't want to shoot
rifles (in the school) for one class? So, I signed up. I never really got
above high 270's, because I shot with my right (non-dominant) eye, and never
wanted to switch to a lefty rifle.
Fast forward many years, I always photographed with my right eye, too.
One of the biggest problems for me was that it was always hard to check my
composition and "see" the final photo through the viewfinder. One day, I
was shooting some bridals for a friend, and due to some positioning, had to
use my left (dominant) eye. I COULD NOT BELIEVE the difference. I was MUCH
more able to "see" the final photo, and things like "antenna-sprouting
heads" and other things popped out at me MUCH more. Now I shoot almost
exclusively with my left eye.

Here's another way. Close one eye, and try to read something like a
magazine as fast as you can. Then, close the other eye, and try and read
something else. The difference between the two will be huge. >> Stay informed about: TIP: shooting with your dominant eye |

For me this changes, depending on which side of the closer object I am
looking at. If i'm looking at the left hand side of a close box it's my
left eye and if I look at the right hand side of a close box, it's my right
eye. And if I look above the centre of a close box, my eyes adjust so that
both of their views are equally used and the space is divided between them.

Try the reading trick I mention in another post in this thread.
Your dominant eye is responsible for nearly all of your perception and
detail-oriented vision, the other mostly helps with peripheral vision and
depth perception. When you try something detail-oriented (like reading)
with you non-dominant eye, you'll notice a big difference.
