Shooting in frigid temps isn't the most fun at the best of times;
adding in a bit of a wind gives you even less time before your
fingers freeze up.

Still, I managed to get some shots of Mich basking in the sun --
a few of which were over-exposed.

My daughter liked one of the light pics, though, enough to try to
salvage it. Here's her attempt:

Who says Canon's can't handle the cold...

Any comments appreciated.

Take Care,
Dudley

That's a good shot, I don't mind the white snow at all... of course the
horizon is crooked Wink but Mitch looks level so it doesn't detract much.

Hey, Paul, thanks for the comments.

I was trying for a bit of fill flash, but it totally blew out
everything, probably should have dialed down the exposure a
bit first...

I was told the horizon was crooked, but there was a bit of a
debate as to whether it was really slanted, or whether I was
just shooting at an angle to it. Some folks thought the trees
in the background looked straight (under all the snow), others
thought the trees were crooked as well as the horizon.

As Mich was mostly level, we just left it the way it was.

Using Elements, my daughter made some adjustment to the
shadows and highlights, trying to balance things out a bit.
It sounds like she got most of it, except, perhaps, his front
legs, which Apparently are still a bit light.

All-in-all, it was a good exercise for her to practice using
some of Adobe's basic restoration tools.

Once again, Thanks,
Dudley

Possibly you were in aperture priority, wide open, and it had to
overexpose or exceed the flash sync speed?

I tried cropping to level it and yeah, it clipped his legs:
http://edgehill.net/1/temp//SnowDay-edit.jpg
I also dropped the brightness a bit (hardly any of the snow is actually
blown and I know it sounds weird but I added a little blur, then
downsized because the face was frighteningly sharp, maybe oversharpened
or just the contrast with fairly shallow DOF but it was kind of
disturbing even on the reduced copy to see that extra crispy detail in
his face and nowhere else.

Snow's blown away - and not the way you want... OTOH, much nicer than
the usual grey exposure of so many such shots... Color of the dog is
nicely saturated though. Is the world that tilted out there? Maybe too
much oil's been drilled...

Naw, drilling's not the problem, it's those darn snow drifts ..
.. Smile
