Is there a way to find out the total number of shutter actuations on the
Nikon D40? Don't see it in the manual anywhere.

In the EXIF info there should be an entry near the bottom called "Total
pictures" or something to that effect.

It's stored in the image file's EXIF data, which some/most photo
editors and viewers can display. IrfanView displays it in the
field labeled "Total pictures".

... and you can see that in IrfanView. Image, Information, EXIF button.

Nikon D40 - From the reviews that I have read so far The Nikon D40 has been rated very good I am in the process of upgrading from my Point and Shoot Cannon A610 of which have had for a year(Still a very nice Camera) to a DSLR would like a bit more megapixels but....
