Greetings,
I just purchased a Canon SD800 and I have a few questions that I'd
appreciate some help with:
- I haven't purchased a memory card yet. Will large sizes like 2GB or
1GB work with it?
- I'm not sure if I need a really fast SD card. I don't plan to use it
for videos at all, but I will be using continuous shooting mode
occasionally. I see SD cards at a variety of prices and speeds, and
I'm not really sure what would be noticable and what would be overkill.
- There are times that I'd like to carry it in my pocket, with no case
(while hiking, for example). I'm worried about possibly scratching the
LCD screen. I'd appreciate any comments on the value of LCD protector
film. Does it work? Does it distort the image in the display?
- One last one. I sometimes will want to use the self-timer. My old
camera was large, and I could usually find something to balance it on
while using self-timer. I love the small size of the SD800, but it
seems like it may be tough to balance it for the self-timer without a
tripod. What I need is a very tiny tripod just for stability (or a
device that would make use of the tripod mount). The smaller, the
better. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help. >> Stay informed about: SD800 advice |

I use a 4GB card in my SD700, so you should be able to use any card in your
800.
It's nice having a large card if you use it to shoot video...since VGA video
at 30fps eats cards for lunch.

LCD protection films actually work very well. They protect against
sratches...just not against the kind of impact that might "break" the LCD.
I've found that the OTHER surfaces on my little SD700 are prone to
scratching. After spending a month in Ukraine carrying it in a small
belt-pack...along with other items, the body surface showed some wear. The
LCD was fine though.

Any crummy camera store will carry small table-pods. With a camera that
small and light, even the tiniest of them will do--in the neighborhood of 5
inches long.

1-2GB should work fine. Larger may or may not;
don't go there.

I'd go moderately fast .. Sandisk Ultra II is fast
enough.

I use a small belt case with my SD700: Tamrac
5680. Holds a spare battery, too. I assume it
would fit the SD800, too. I'd never carry a
camera in my pocket.

There is a very tiny one I use. Bought it at REI
but have seen elsewhere.

Yes, a 2GB is the smallest I would consider because they are
now very reasonable in price.

As another has already suggested "Sandisk Ultra II" is more
than fast enough & has a lifetime warrantee.
Having a 2nd memory card & battery is always a good idea. You
never know when something photo worthy may arise & you will feel
helpless being @ the right time & place when you run out of memory or
battery power & don't have a spare with you.
>- There are times that I'd like to carry it in my pocket, with no case
>(while hiking, for example).
This is highly inadvisable for several reasons:
<1> "(while hiking, for example)", At the very least keep it in a
heavy duty zip-lock type freezer bag to protect it from the following:
<A> Perspiration, which can cause condensation to form inside the
camera (electronics & or optics).
<B> Hiking often kicks up more very fine dust than you may realize &
you don't want that getting into your camera either.
<C> Pocket lint will likely find it's way into the camera as well.
<D> The LCD may be scratched or otherwise damaged. Hikers do
sometimes loose their footing & you don't want the relatively
unprotected LCD to receive any pressure between you & the ground/rock.

Can't help you here very much because I have mixed feeling
about screen protectors. Anything placed between your eyes & the LCD
will degrade the image quality somewhat but it's up to you to
determine if the image quality loss is worth the level of protection
added. In most applications I would say it's not worth it but if I
was going to use it in dusty places allot (the Beach or a dusty hiking
trail), it might be worth it.

Sony has the best tripod design I have ever seen for use with
small pocket cameras & it too folds flat & is *very* pocket size. I
have 2 of them for various cameras & use them often for long exposure
pictures with the self timer. Here is the link:

If this link does not work because it's too long, try this:
www.sonystyle.com
Click on "digital camera", then "accessories", then tripods & the last
1 listed should be the "VCT-TK1 Tabletop Tripod". Hope this meets
your needs, it works well for me & it weighs a whopping 3.5 oz.
(300g) & even comes with a carry pouch!
Also you may want to check out:
http://www.sterlingtek.com/index.html
They have very good prices on generic batteries & chargers.
I've had very good luck with their products as have several friends
who have also done business with them. Just remember that Lithium-ion
batteries last longest when used, so alternate between the spare & the
primary (if you get a 2nd) battery so they both get used.

Just hope what I offered was helpful to you & or others.

Bad advice, I fear. Some 4 GB SD cards may work;
but the SD spec only goes to 2 GB. Above that the
standard is SD HC.
If he buys the one you have, it likely will work.
So you should provide that info.
