While it's installed in the camera, can the SD memory card be used
as a normal flash memory storage device like a USB flash drive in
Windows? Can the SD card be partitioned so that the camera uses part
and the rest is used for backing up personal computer files in
Windows?

Specifically.
I've looked but haven't seen a very clear answer for the largest SD
memory card a Coolpix L3 can use. I suppose it's 2 GB. So can I buy
a 4 GB SD card and use the other 2 GB for computer storage while the
card is installed in the camera?

Thank you.

According to this chart, the L1 will take 4 GB so I suspect the L3 will too.

Hello, John:

I think that such dual-purpose storage may "confuse" the camera and
cause it to corrupt the memory card.

Regardless of its maximum capacity, it's probably unwise to use a card
in that manner.
