Agonising over the Canons S3 IS, S5 IS or the Sony H9.

Any opinions welcome before I buy.

Amateur but fussy general use.

Suggest you also look at Kodak P series.

The S5 will not be shipping until June. Reviews should be out by then.
It seems to have more features than the S3. I am agonizing between the
S5 (assuming that the image quality is good) and the Panasonic FZ8.
Reviews say the FZ8 has noisy images but the camera is great.

The main problem with all of the reviews is that they do not have
detailed head to head reviews (especially as to image quality and camera
performance; one can easily compare features) between cameras that
people will choose between. Maybe they do not want to upset their
advertisers.

How can a camera be 'great' and have noisy images?

Ron,

All cameras produce noisy images! A camera may seem to be "noisy" by
having less noise-reduction processing imposed on the images by default
(in comparison with the competition) - i.e. leaving you more in control.

Canon S5 IS nyday...

1) Its a CANON (this itself is a very srong point o its own)

2) Sony uses very high Noise reduction when shooting in High ISO thus
resulting in blurring of the images

3) High Fringing of images (even though fringing is visible in Canon
but is relativelly less)

4) The DIGIC III processor it uses is far superior in its class.

5) Sony offers high ISO (upto 3200) which is good in some cases but
also increases the Noise in the image...

if u compare the Canon s3 IS to the s5IS ... there is no significant
improvent which i believe Canon should have given.. just some
Megapixels improvement and the size of LCD is not good enough to
justify an cost escalation of $200..

i hope this helps...

P.S. Sony H9 is also in the same price range that of S5...so according
to me it should be the S5

Regards

Gee... Just go to the store and try them in your hands. You will see
at once if you like the camera or dislike it.

Not necessarily. I agree a Canon camera is likely to make good quality
pictures. They look good. However, when I take a Canon camera in my
hands (e.g. in the camera shop or at work), I feel disconnected from
the aesthetics of physical appearance of the camera. The ergonomics
of the camera (how the knobs operate the camera) looks to me
unappealing. But I have made an emotional connection with a Panasonic
camera. That's the most important factor to decide when choosing the
camera.

i am more practical when buying electronics not emotional... when i
get the best( atleast i think), then i get emotionally attached to
it...

Panasonic is also very good in image quality but the noise levels aree
high compared to the canon..

Nix
