I bought a Canon S3 IS some months ago.

I'm looking for a second card to add to the second hand SanDisk Ultra
II 4GB card I'm using now.

I was thinking that the S3 can only use SD cards, not SDHC. But now I
read that SD cards only go to 2GB, and my card must be SDHC even
though it doesn't say SDHC anywhere on it. I bought it second hand and
did not get any packaging or documentation with it. It definitely is a
4GB card as I can record 30 minutes of 640x480 30fps video on it (and
frequently do). And this morning I had to empty the card, and there
was 3.7GB of "stuff" on it.

(Note that I was concerned after reading that there are counterfeit
cards floating around labelled as SanDisk Ultra II, but the card seem
to work absolutely fine).

So can I buy pretty well "any" SDHC card for the camera?

Interesting. I note Yoshi's followup saying that the card is SD
compatible (thanks Yoshi).

But what you say is interesting too. My card doesn't say SDHC anywhere
on it.

Even when the SanDisk SDHC card was released, it said SDHC on it
(http://www.photographyblog.com/index.php/weblog/comments/
sandisk_4gb_ultra_ii_sd_high_capacity_card/).

My card looks identical to the 1GB and 2GB Ultra 2 cards (e.g.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-ULTRA-1GB-Memory-Card/dp/B0007QU7KU)
except that my card says 4GB.

So it looks quite plausible that my card is one of the non-standard
cards you mention. Fortunately, the card works well in my device.
Perhaps I've been lucky.

That should be "that the camera is SDHC compatible".

I note this bit in a review on that page:

> Pros: This card does an excellent job with my Palm TX as well as my digital camera. Neither of these will use the 4GB SDHC card but work fine with this one. If your device is an older one and will not use an SDHC card this is an excellent choice.

This definitely suggests that the transcend cards aren't SHDC, neither
by name nor by nature.

Yes, although the initial specificatons of the S3IS didn't indicate SDHC
cards, Canon later announced that the camera was SDHC compatible. I use 4GB
SDHC on mine with no problems.

I've never run across one myself, but I've read about 4GB non-standard
SD cards. They're not SDHC, but they're not really SD either, but will
work in some devices. Maybe that's what you have.

Newegg, my parts vendor of choice, lists two "Transcend" 4GB SD cards

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820163159
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208086

neither of which shows SDHC. But, when you try to find them on
Trancend's Web site, they're not listed. Searching for them by part
number points to data from their download area, so maybe they stopped
making them.

Well, a 4G SDHC card works fine in my camera.

Trouble is, it doesn't work in my card reader. Oh well, at least the
card reader only cost £5 (actually 50p + £4.50 "postage and packing").
I can use the card by connecting the camera directly to the computer
and using gthumb-import.

Now that I have multiple cards, it's time to look at installing that
open-source replacement firmware thing onto one of them so that I can
give it a go.

I've just realised that this probably means that my 4G sandisk card is
a 4G SD card, not an SDHC.

My previous reader cost me 50p plus £4.50 P&P. I can buy a SDHC reader
for 1p and £4.99 P&P. Wow! The card is 50 times cheaper than before.

I have 2 4G SDHC cards (Kodak). I was explained that they are SD.
The HC merely stands for High Capacity. That's why you won't find
SD cards bigger than 2G. I never had any problems and actually I
enjoy the speed with which they transfer data to my computer.
Good luck.

Has anyone actually tried a true SDHC card in an S3? I would buy one if
it is known that they will work.

SDHC has a different interface to SD, but SDHC-compatible devices can
use SD cards without problems.

I have a Sandisk Ultra II 4Gb SD card which I use in a PDA (not my
camera, which can use SDHC). This is not an SDHC card but a pure SD
card. My PDA won't work with SDHC cards, being too old. I have a small
SD-USB card reader that only works with SD cards and it will read and
write this 4Gb SD card perfectly.

There isn't anything bigger than 4Gb in pure SD format available on the
market as far as I can tell. I believe that the 4Gb SD-only cards aren't
being made any more, but you can still find them for sale if you look
for them -- for example:

Right.

You got lucky in this case. The SD standard does not define the interface
for more than 2GB, therefore it is pure chance if the manufacturer of the
card had the same idea (or oversight) as the manufacturer of the camera and
the manufacturer of the card reader.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card:
"Before SDHC was standardized, various manufacturers "extended" the SD
control block fields for their 2 GB and 4 GB cards in different ways. Those
cards are incompatible with many SD and some SDHC devices, as they conform
to neither standard. All SDHC readers work with standard SD cards."

According to Canon's web site
http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/dcc/data/2005-2006/2006_ps-s...s.html?
it does not: "Recording Media SD memory card/MultiMediaCard"
