Remote Control for Nikon Coolpix L1

I'm interested in this sw (RC) to be used on my notebook but unfortunately
it is enough old and can hold only Win98 and this sw works only under
WinXP... (I understand that by now Win98 is unsupported, but when RC was
issued it was still on support - moreover RC is a plus of Picture Project,
which is supported under Win98 - anyway complaining is of no use).
Now I'm looking for some trick to avoid buying a new notebook only to be
able to run RC... isn't there some way to run under WinXP a sw written for
Win98? Alternatively I found that there is some free sw written by
university people but only old digital cameras are foreseen, not L1...
someone can help?
