Recovering deleted files from a FAT filesystem if no writes have occurred
is not a terribly challenging task. In the past, I've written utilities
that are capable of doing that. Deleting a file on a FAT filesystem
consists of setting a few bits which mark the corresponding blocks as free
- the information in the File Allocation TAble as to what constitutes the
file are still intact. There should be a couple dozen freeware utilities
to do that.

Hi,

I had 100 or so images deleted by a computer, inadvertently, from an SD
card, including 36 from a friend's wedding.Several programs, both free
and paid for, did not recover any pix, but eImage Recovery did recover
most, including 34 of the 36 wedding pix.

This is not totally true

When a FAT file is deleted, the File Allocation Table is also cleared
down, so fragmented files are harder to reconstruct. For FAT12 and
FAT16, the pointer to the start of the file is valid, and if the file
is sequential, recovery is easy.

For FAT32 the problem is worse as the higher 16 bits of the cluster
number is also deleted. As the file pointer is not complete, the
address of the file/photo is not precise. Many recovery programs
ignore this and so cannot recover files from deleted FAT32 drives.

Very few programs will attempt defragmenting deleted FAT files.
Fortunately, not many photo files are fragmented, but if your most
important photo is, then .... On a 2GB memory chip I recovered today,
50 out of 500 were fragmented

Well, just doing an undelete on FAT is trivial.

It becomes much more challenging and interesting when the directory
entry has been reused or the whole directory becomes corrupt and the
program has to recover the file data by searching and investigating
the data blocks.
No, I never had to do that myself, but it is something to keep in mind
when getting a file recovery program. Can it handle corrupted
directories?

I've not looked at FAT32 - you're probably right. All the cards I work
with are 2gb or less - hence FAT16.

That's a good reason to not delete photos from a card. I tend to shoot
until it's full, download and then format in the camera.

Although I have been fortunate enough to never loose files on a flash
card, I can highly recommend R-Studio as a general file recovery
application. I've been forced to use it three or four times now and every
time it's done a great job.

Good software for the money.
Take a look at this link

for looking at recovering from your supposedly NEW camera.

I used the freebie software that comes with new Sandisk cards on an
old CF card that had been formatted at least ten times. It recovered
all the old shots from a year ago that hadn't been physically
overwritten.

I would suggest that as a good free one. I purchased PhotoRescue prior
to trying Recovery Manager. They both do similar job, PhotoRescue might
be marginally better.
These programs work quite well even if card has been formatted. I've
only ever tested recovering .jpg files.

As a follow-up to my recent post, I tried Vaiosoft Recovery Manager for
my "deleted" images, and it recovered exactly zero. E-Image Recovery
fully recovered 32 of 36 images from this card. Perhaps you do get what
you pay for.

Good luck.
